Barry Greenstein theory of people not wanting to go out on the first hand could play a part, but you will never get villain to fold J8/JT here ever. He also could be slowplaying a set on a dry board. I think you can get a decent J to fold some of the time but given no reads and the fact that it's a $10 tournament, it's unlikely.

i think 3 barrel bluffing on the first hand of a $10 tournament is generally not a good idea

People in $10 tournies block bet the river and then don't fold to a push.

(OT) People in $10 tournies also call an ep raise on the button with q4s and then call a check-raise all in with second pair and no draw on an ace high board. I [censored] hate $10 tournies and I needed to get that off my chest.
