this play is not very good at all.
Peavy is one of the best in the game right now and San Diego is playing for its playoff life while San Fran is playin for peanuts.
Last night the Padres put up a 4 spot in the 9th to win.

I dont understand. What is the value? I think pitching is the most important part of the game, and Peavy is significantly better. Again, where was the value? Betting against the odds for a good price? He only bet a unit.

As mentioned, the value is in the fact that...

1) Jake Peavy is one of the best pitchers in baseball
2) San Diego is playing for their playoff life
3) Points 1 & 2 are both widely available public knowledge

Thus the betting public will be going to the betting window to put their money on San Diego. If sports books didn't already hang a line shaded against SDG, then the betting action on SDG will likely push the line to overvalue SDG. I can't speak for Rick, but I am guessing he calculated a "true line" of something like San Francisco +160 thus the value in San Francisco +185.
