Hmm ... I'm 1/16th Native American (some tribe (which one I don't know) in Cass County, Missouri).

Perhaps it's time I do some digging to find the name (and tribe) of my Great, Great, Grandmother (on my mother side), who was full blood Native American and see if I can get some money!

[/ QUOTE ]

I would hope you're kidding, but most tribes have no smaller than 1/8th blood quantum to become a member, and even then some tribes require a parent to be a member. There are some that have 1/16th, but I can guarantee that the ones giving it 7k+ a month are NOT those tribes.

Actually I'm not kidding (about being 1/16th native american), but I was in regards to Searching purely for money reasons. In reality the only reason why I've actually been searching, is for Genology reasons (only).

As for being 1/8th, well my Mom is, and she's still alive at a spritely 71 years of age.

However, I hit a roadblock a while back, in regards to my Geneology search for my (Maternal) Great Grandfather, James Dixon who was 1/2 Native American from Cass County Missouri (it was his mother, who was full Native American), and my Maternal Grandmother (his Daughter) passed away about 3 years ago.

I actually read though someplace, that some tribes recognize as little as 1/32nd Native American (which then my son would qualify as well), but I've really never actively looked into it any further than that.

Each member of the tribe that owns Pechanga casino here in SoCal is making $30,000/month.

[/ QUOTE ]

And those lovely tribal elders are kicking out long time members so that they can increase the average take for those remaining. Los Angeles Times had an in depth article last Sunday on it.

I doubt anyone will be let in to the tribes if the tribe has a successful casino. This type of stuff is happening all over the place.

And in California, the tribes said they would "help out" other California tribes that were unable to open a casino due to their location (middle of nowhere). They are giving almost nothing.

Greed can be an ugly thing.

I have a friend of a friend who is part of a tribe in CA. I don't know how much he gets each month but he is able to afford a lot of drugs and support himself without working.

i've always wondered why the richer tribes (with casinos) don't help out the other tribes. think i read somewhere the poorest areas of the usa are indian reservations

[/ QUOTE ]

Before whites came, Native American tribes fought each other. There are many tribes that were bitter enemies with other tribes. Some of that still exists today and may be a reason tribes do not share with each other.

While some Native American tribes have prospered with Indian Gaming there are indeed many reservations that are very very poor. I live on the edge of a reservation and I can guarantee that I have never seen anything anywhere else in the United States that comes close to some of the horrible conditions on some Indian reservations.

And Yes, Some of the comments are insensitive, rude and inappropriate.

Time magazine article

I read the above article a few years ago and found it quite interesting. Seems that most of the Native Americans get shafted on the casino deals, while a few (along with their backers) make out like bandits.

[/ QUOTE ]

Anyone have the second part to this article?
