Moving to Vegas. Is it all possible?
Hi everyone,
I am from an Asian country and I plan to move to Vegas to play poker full time. Yup, I am just a kid with a dream who wants to escape from the 9-5 grind. I want to know if it is feasible. I am fairly good at limit as I am a tight, patient and conservative player and I know that is what it takes at lower limits. So is it possible? I plan to start on the 3/6 limit HE games. As for living, perhaps I can rent a cheap room in Vegas? What prices can I expect for rent? What are the monthly expenses usually like for a young bachelor over there? I don't plan to eat in fancy casinos and stuff like that, I plan to cook on my own, etc. Perhaps I don't even need a tv or Internet to begin with. I would save aside: 3/6 LHE Bankroll: $2000 1-2 months initial living expenses: $1000 Emergency money: $500 So is it possible? Remember, this figures are from living very cheaply as I don't mind bad conditions. I am a very whatever guy. I just need a place to sleep. Also, since it is full time, it would be playing anywhere between 6-10 hours a day consistently. What I am scared of is that the 3/6 limit HE games would have a high rake thus making the game inconsistent and hard to win. Do these physical casinos usually have a high rake? When I have build my bankroll perhaps I can move to higher stakes. Is it all possible? |

Seems like an awful tiny hourly wage...given the slow pace of live games. Can't imagine how devastating a 300BB downswing would be in live games, when its tough to deal with on the internet, where you can get 8 times as many hands per hour.

3-6 isn't spread many places in Vegas. You will have to play 4-8 if you want to be able to play from all the selection of rooms. Allvegaspoker.com gives good info about all the rooms in Vegas including rake. I once lived for a whole year off of $2500 and $355 a month rent and only working 2 months out of that year, so yes it is possible. But you really should save enough for 4-8 and have enough emergency money for a plane ticket back home if you fail.

There are several things wrong with your plan. But without getting into the poker aspect of things, you will most likely not be able to get a visa to come here and play poker.

Re: Moving to Vegas. Is it all possible?
Low limit casino poker is not very profitable in the long run. The rake is higher, and if you plan on tipping dealers/waitresses your win rate will be extremely low even considering that you play well. At AC the rake is 10% capped at $4 for low limits, and I would imagine it is similar for vegas. This is pretty high.
I think internet play or live NL play are both way more profitable than live low limit. If you are basing a huge move to pursue this I would ask that you reconsider. |

Re: Moving to Vegas. Is it all possible?
Well, from the looks of it, it seems I have to start at the 4/8 tables. And wow, $4 max isn't so bad. I used to play in Australian casinos and the 4/8 limit games has a max rake of $8!
So a minor tweak to that scale is: 4/8 LHE Bankroll: $2500. A little over 300BB. And very importantly, it looks like I can't toke anyone or order any drinks or stuff like that. I would have to bring my own bottle of water. Every little spending counts. |

why not play online from your current home, at least until you can build up a bankroll? your earn should be much higher, and your cost of living lower.

I can't take playing online, staring in front of a computer for long hours. I very much rather do it physically.
