1) WHY are you raising? Do you want the villain to fold a worse hand? Do you want him to break? You should be raising to shut out John, that will show value in the long run, but not because you are ahead.

If I counted right, hero is pretty much indifferent to John calling. If he's still drawing, he has 6 outs of which 2 are dead.

Of course, there's the implied odds to sort out also.

I wasn't considering John to be the villain here, sorry if I confused you.

Right, I just don't see how getting John (with 4 outs) to fold is really buying that much equity.

I guess there is the case where John has 5 outs with A23. So, you're going to pick up a little value there.

I thought there was a pretty decent chance I was ahead of the CO (the median badugi in this game was certainly not a 9), and I also wanted to knock out John if drawing (which is a play that may not have as much value in badugi and may be a habit I've retained from TD).

after having this hand linger in my head for a couple days, I think I gut it...

I would lead out after you make your 9, this puts John in a tough spot, fearing action might get raised and reraised before it gets back to him, so hes unlikely to tag along (I can see the look he will give you when you make this bet, like wtf are doing type look).

If John made a hand it may get raised and 3 bet before it gets back to you, now you can fold.

If John calls and CO raises, I stand PAT and payoff river..

you put in same 3 big bets, you get to make it to showdown, and you still apply the squeeze presure on MJ.

It may be a bad habit for badugi, but i've carried over the TD habit of checking blind when oop in a live game and drawing behind. So leading out was not possible at that point, but someone else had suggested the same thing to me.
