I think the push is marginal, unless the big stack (who definitely can afford to call wide) is calling fairly tight.

I don't change my play because a player is sitting out, they tend to come back.

I'm going to take a stab at this to see if can figure the logic. I did not get it either but let's see if this sounds reasonable based on the statement.

There is $400 in the pot so your fold equity is diminished against the big stack. He has a larger range this hand that he can call you with than next.

Next hand he has to worry about the 2nd largest stack who is in the BB. The BB (2nd stack) has more at risk in calling you and he's just seen you push into the two largest stacks.
