If it's not a piece to a bigger puzzle, I agree with you. Red Sox fans here must be looking at this with their hearts. If you seriously think having Bronson Arroyo on your team is something you need, you need to take another look. I see someone mentioned his post-season experience; his post-season ERA is 7.41.

lemme be the first to say....crazy

Not to let facts get in the way of your fantasy, but Hatteberg had a below average OBP last year.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think Hatteberg was battling an injury last year, but I'm not sure. Historically he's been an OBP machine.

Would you or bugstud like to prop bet Wily Mo's OBP vs. Hatteberg's this year?

I think Hatteberg will almost surely outperform Pena in OBP, and maybe OPS as well, even though Pena clearly has more power. If that's the case, then he may very well be an upgrade over Pena for the time being, and I might not be crazy.

P.S. Quit ruining my misguided optimism...it's hard being a Reds fan.

I mentioned it. He improves our starting staff. Nice move by Reds.

Well we've had all that offense for the past couple years and haven't been that successful. Casey was making a lot more than he was worth, Kearns is way more hype than actual production, Pena is inconsistent, kills you in the field, and can't hit breaking stuff, and Griffey kills you in the field and can't score from second on a double. So maybe it was time to make a change. If I had my druthers I'd have traded Griffey to anyone willing to pick up his contract for some bats and balls and 2 prospects of their choice, but oh well.

By far the best of the bunch is Dunn but the fan base (not including me) seemingly hates him because he strikes out so much even though he's basically your ideal middle-of-the-order power bat. Go figure.

As for that prop I'll have to crunch some #'s and get back to you.

How exactly does Bronson's post-season era matter? We're talking about the Reds.

it counts, but sample size, my friend. without it he's got a 4.80, not great but not nearly as bad.

you beat me by a minute!

1st impression: don't like the deal for the Red Sox. Bronson was a dependable 3rd/4th starter making cheap money. He'd also proven he could thrive under Boston pressure.

Pena has decent numbers and is young, but I gotta think Arroyo is more valuable.

Plus Pena has a dumb name.

[/ QUOTE ]

My thoughts exactly.
