Good acting is when I do not get the feeling I'm watching actors. I want to experience a story, not see some people read lines. Also, I think my emotional commitment to a scene or character is also directly related to their acting. So if I tear up during a scene, the acting was good.

I also value actors much more if I've seen them perform various (very different) roles well. This is the reason I think Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio are great actors, especially the former. I've seen Robert de Niro do the same character for dozens of movies. I think he is great as that character, but I don't necessarily think he is an exceptionally good actor.

When I see an actor playing a role and I can't typecast that actor.

Leonardo DiCaprio
Harrison Ford
Tom Hanks
Morgan Freeman

Everytime I see Michael Richards, I think racist first, then Kramer. Alan Alda will always be Hawkeye, even 30 years later.

Good actors make you believe they are actually real. It's extremely rare to find.

I used to think this until the West Wing. He was great in that.

matt,

re: kramer, i'm pretty sure if harrison ford had starred in 65 hours of star wars films you'd find it hard to look beyond that as well.

Well, the problem with this is that there are some very good actors that simply have played a specific role for a large portion of their (popular) career, so even though they act well, I will always associate them with that character. This is especially true if I haven't seen the actor in anything else except that role and most prevalent with actors from TV-series.

Meh, I've seen the Star Wars movies over 100 times each so I disagree.

If they are so good, why haven't they gotten more roles?
I mean, no director is going to cast an actor like Michael Richards in a lead role playing someone like Tony Soprano; but you could see Harrison Ford pulling it off.

I actually don't think Ford could pull that off but I don't particularly like him as an actor. He just doesn't do it for me but I guess that's besides the point.

One example off the top of my head is Anthony Edwards. I think he did a great job in E.R. and even though I saw him in Zodiac, and probably a dozen other stuff I can't remember, he will always be Dr. Mark Green to me.

Then again, maybe a trait of a good actor is the ability to play a wide variety of roles. So if I have seen an actor on an x-year running tv show, I can't qualify him as a good actor even though his performance as that character was good.

When I can't tell she's faking it.

Also, when I begin to feel the same emotion as the character. Like in a sad scene, I start crying. Or in a battle scene, I wanna slay something. An example would be Jason Alexander on Seinfeld when he makes a joke and I smile or George does something pathetic and I pity him.
