I think I played this wrong. I had just moved to this table (few hands had been played). Hadn't seen much of the big stack. Should I have just called, and then put out a big bet on the turn or was I correct in shoving?

You were a 92% favourite to win the hand with 2 cards to come, so I can't see how you should have played the hand different. He may have been scared by the king on the turn, but since he raised you with an overcard and nearly no chance to improve his hand, this is a very unlikely scenario. He just got lucky, nothing you can do about it.
