OK then, why is spread the new hotness and straight old and busted? [/ QUOTE ] Trends in shirt patterns are being set in spread collars, which better showcase ties and prints. Thomas Pink or Mens Vogue for details. |

OK then, why is spread the new hotness and straight old and busted? [/ QUOTE ] The straight collar is meant to be more formal and less conspicuous than the spread which is a more elegant, carefree look. The spread collar also looks far better without a tie. FWIW I use the four-in-hand knot exclusively, using a thicker tie if I'm looking for a bigger knot. |

but i think the half windsor is under-rated. [/ QUOTE ] Always hated the full windsor. I think the half-windsor is big enough for most spread collars. |

If you have a wide face, like me, spread collars are going to make you look fatter.
With a normal collared shirt I let the tie decide what knot. If it's a thick tie I go with the four-in-hand. If not, half-Windsor. |

Re: What is the current fashion in men\'s tie knots?
Since this thread grew legs, I will mention that I went with my old standard half Windsor.
The event was a little strange on the scale. It was an ashes spreading ceremony at Berkeley Marina with a party at the Claremont Hotel afterward. While this was supposed to be an 'informal' wear-what-you-will event, it was an occasion to mark the passing of my stepfather-in-law. I thought a suit might be overdressing but felt that I should acknowledge the man with some sort of effort in dress. Dress codes in California can be confusing at times. Attendees ranged from his old pals in suits to work shirt and jeans. I wore black slacks, my standby funereal black tie, and a lime green dress shirt (since it was a party after all). The fact that I have gained a few pounds since I used to work in ties was clear to me. Man, a tie just don't hang right if it isn't going straight down |

Chip and others,
Can you really ever overdress for events like this? Even if you're the only guy wearing a suit, most sensible people aren't going to give you flack about it. I say you did a job well done, sir. |
