Yeah, there should be zero incentive to say that you challenge the 'first down' if I'm understanding it correctly.

A challenge is supposed to mean that any other part of the play is included. You don't have to go through the list of things that you want challeneged to my knowledge.
All coaches know this.
Challenge one aspect and the whole play gets challenged.
So if you think he might have been out-of-bounds AND he might have trapped the ball you have to choose which part of the play should have made the pass incomplete and if you don't guess correctly then you are charged a time-out?
Weird and dumb.

What if they thought the guy stepped out of bounds just before reaching the end-zone....but the replay shows that his knee touched the ground back at the 50. The play is reversed and touchdown is overtunred and the ball is brought all the way back to the 50 but he actually didn't step out-of-bounds at the 2 so that team is 'penalized' and not allowed to use their challenge again?
That's just weird.

Incorrect phrasing or choosing the wrong part of the officials bothced-call/s when the challenge indeed does result in ANY ruling in your favor is stupid.

I'm sure Jerry Markbreit will cover this in his colum for the Tribune this week.

And if you haven't read Jerry's Q&A column before, it's a must read....he covers reader questions regarding specific rulings from all games the previous Sunday, giving the exact rules interpretations and what factored in the call.

And when a mistake is made, he calls it.

You can only challenge the spot of a ball if it involves a first down, therefore if the down isn't changed then you lose the challenge.

I'm 100% sure I'm right about the first part, 99.996% sure I'm right about the 2nd.

He challenged whether it should have been a first down, not the spot of the ball.

Although the spot of the ball was changed, the result of the play (a first down) that was challenged remained the same. Therefore, he lost the challenge.

There was some wacky ass [censored] going on in this game involving reviews. First, how the hell do they do a booth review for 12 men on the field and reverse it when even Madden can circle all the guys and see its legit?? Also, how did they not review the final play? Seems like that should be a standard booth review, unless they don't allow the booth to review plays if a team doesn't have a challenge left, but I don't think that's the case.
