For content, I heard the word eloquent, or eloquence in a hip hop lyric a few weeks ago and I've been using it ever since, really nice word.

[/ QUOTE ]
A Spanish friend of mine said that the definition of being eloquent is "being able to define that word without waving your arms around"

[ QUOTE ]
I have had the experience of reading a word and sounding it out in my head but upon hearing it spoken I realize I was pronouncing it wrong.

eg.

centrifical

i had read it but not heard it and pronounced it SEN-tri-fic-al, when it is actually sen-TRIF-i-cal.

[/ QUOTE ]

i've done this with names of authors like twice in the past few months and looked like a clown both times

once in front of a girl i was hitting on (for some reason we were talking about recent books we'd read, i had just finished reading the stranger, and called the author "kam-us." whoops.).

Anyway, the phenomenon described in OP (which I now know is called "confirmation bias" and will probably hear that term several times in the near future) exists in other forms of expression besides individual words...

[/ QUOTE ]
What I find satisfying about the confirmation bias is that once you know it exists, you spot lots of situations where it exists, and know what mechanism caused both that situation and your recognition of it. Ideas that describe lots of things AND themselves are great.

I got 1450 on my SAT and 25 on my ACT, but look at that [censored, [censored] Gulf of [censored] Mexico

[/ QUOTE ]

pretty large disparity there between your SAT and ACT scores.

[/ QUOTE ]
The two tests evaluate different things about a student. The ACT tests how well a student remembers and can use the knowledge learned in high school. The SAT is a test to figure out how well a student will do in their first semester of college.

I was assuming that the 1450 was out of 2400 or something.
