What I do, when I get burned out on poker, is switch games or do a whole lot of theoretical analysis (like working through face up values or the distribution of post flop equity of a hand versus ranges, or something like that). For me, burn out is almost always the result of boredom, and boredom is the result of not learning or experiencing something new. ymmv.

A real job is one which you can earn a living wage off of that can sustain a family. Not that job working in the bakery at Panera or stocking groceries or delivering pizzas or working at the theatre or whatever other of these "real jobs" you talk about that can get you by week to week. Thats not a "real job" thats called a grind.


If you actually mean "real jobs" like an ASP developer or draft engineer or something that can actually turn into a real career, then well, I apologize. But don't try to make it sound like you can't get anywhere with just a "crappy associates". I make 50+ a year with "just a crappy associates" - and I'm underpaid for what I do.

i figure in 10 years or so i can probably move down to a part time job, then in another 10 years retire.

by not having an interest bearing account (i dunno if u do or not, but i have 3) in a few years time ur going to be kicking yourself when u realize how much $ you've lost out on in compounding interest. it's pretty phenominal stuff.

edit: just wanted to make a point that in the morning if ur not playing you can still sit around and STILL get paid for it.

i'll just second this. if you want to continue being a 1/2 grinder for the rest of your life play a massive amount of tables, but just playing a few tables will almost certainly make you a better player and probably a little saner.

It is mentally exhausting to play your A-game at poker for more than a few hours at a time and I don't know any pro playing more than 30 hrs a week.

Multitabling Poker takes 10X the mental concentration in a given hour than a typical desk job.

i bet playing 6-7 tables of NL200 FR is just as monotonous if not more so than most jobs. that's probably why it's so draining. if you're having fun playing, then yes, it's definitely mentally draining; but, that gives you a different (a better) feeling than the terrible effects of boredom.

FWIW there was a debate in MSNL a little bit ago, and a large % of the posters said that 2 mil wasn't enough to retire at 30.
