The way the NBA draft is structured gives owners a huge advantage over the rookies, however. It's borderline ridiculous, actually.

[/ QUOTE ]

But the #1 pick in the NBA makes WAY more than the #1 pick in the NHL. And if you're a 2nd-rounder in the NBA you're an unrestricted free agent when your deal ends. You're not bound to the 3+1+1 to restricted free agency deal that first-rounders are.

In 2005 Andrew Bogut would have gotten something like $19M for his 3+1 year deal. Sidney Crosby would have gotten under $4M in salary.

[/ QUOTE ]

However, Crosby earned several million in bonuses, and will make 8.7 million next year as a 21 year old.

[/ QUOTE ]

True, but even with those bonuses, less than $4 million/year. NHL players having their "full" salary kick in in the 4th year (instead of the 5th like NBA) is a boost.

LeBron would probably have been a better comparison (despite the two years difference in draft years). He earned almost $19M in salary in his first four (about even if not a touch less than Crosby). But then LeBron will make an average of $20M a year for the next three (and even more if he exercises his fourth year option.

NBA players make more because there are less of them. What's an NBA active roster, 12 guys? NHL has nearly double that. Furthermore, goalies excluded, even the best players can only play half the game - the best NBA players average far more than that.

An NHL player's maximum contract as outlined in the CBA is 9 million dollars a year.

MLBPA and its not even close.

I have no idea how the NFL manages to have the weakest Union when i believe as a sport it generates the most money.

[/ QUOTE ]

Because of Gene Upshaw, for one.

Because the players caved in like a souffle during the last strike.

Because the average length of an NFL career is so short, the big guarantee bonus players don't care about following generations of players.

Because contracts aren't guaranteed (only signing bonues), the player reps on each team don't have the backbone to actually take a strong labor stance -- because they know they'll be out of a job.

Did I mention Gene Upshaw?

Actually, the MLBPA is about the *only* strong players union. NHL, NBA, NFL all have salary caps. The NBA players had to decertify their own union, because the top players were so willing to cave to owners that they didn't want their union representing them anymore. The NHL lockout? Yup, I see how players are so much better off with team salaries much lower than before.

I don't even know why this is a discussion, really. It's not a matter of degrees of strength -- the MLBPA is the only one of any of them that has actually served their players well at all.

Just because Lewis, Sizemore, et. al. are making less than market value now doesn't mean the MLBPA sucks - when these players are granted FA, they will be overpaid anyway.

[/ QUOTE ]

And how many players don't make up that money because of injuries? Seeing a pitcher put up three or four valuable (relative to his contract) seasons and then succumbing to arm problems is not an uncommon story in MLB.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nor is signing a weak armed over the hill 3rd or 4th starter for $8m a year.

The #1 pick in the NFL makes way more (in his rookie contract) than either sport. E.g., Russell signed a $61M contract with $29M guaranteed. He likely won't even play a minute this season.

(Not saying the NFL has the strongest union. Just saying that using rookie deals to determine the strongest union is flawed.)

And yet, if the NBA players had an effective union, Lebron would already be commanding near Michael Jordan dollars. Jordan earned more than Lebron will in any of the next 3-4 years, and he did it 5-6 years ago.

In MLB, there is no salary cap at all, and players contract are guaranteed. 'nuff said.
