I was torn between calling w/ the intention of shoving a safe turn card or folding.

I ended up folding.

Given the description of the game and the opponent I'd just fold. Typical weak live players don't expect you to fold an overpair, and they want to find out as cheap as possible if you have AK so they call with their pair to see if you bet again. When you get raised it means he can beat what you're representing.
