Each candidate is responsible for gaining the votes they need to win the election. It is Al Gore's responsibility to appeal to the voters he needs to get into office. If he does not do this, and Nader gets those votes, then the failure is solely on Al Gore.

Also, I think its impossible to assume that those who voted for Nader would have turned around and voted for Al Gore, had Nader not run. They may have voted for another candidate, not voted at all, etc.
