Re: Fear of dying - Religious vs non-religious people
Slightly off topic as well. Maybe it deserves its own thread but I can't start new ones yet.

Re: Fear of dying - Religious vs non-religious people
[ QUOTE ]
I tend to live a hypomanic, let-that-which-does-not-matter truly slide life (Fight Club, i've watched it too many times) . It works. Immerse yourself into activities, run around, explore stuff and just BE. THINK about everything, but be free to throw away stuff that doesn't help. Or is that a bad approach? [/ QUOTE ] Sounds like a yoga/meditative approach - not sure what it would be called - but works for many people. |

"It's just extremely difficult for me to understand why would anyone want to live forever, but one reason is probably because the concept of eternity is impossible to understand for humans. Those who want to live forever, just want to be alive tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. " I want to live forever...As long as its a healthy forever. I want to see us go into the Star Wars age dude. [/ QUOTE ] "A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." |

Re: Fear of dying - Religious vs non-religious people
[ QUOTE ]
I grew up with faith in religion and afterlife. A few years ago, I finally allowed my self to rationally contemplate death without afterlife. I only held onto religion blindly to allow myself to not have to not have to consider my mortality. It took me a very long time to accept the idea of non-existence after death. At first, I would have panic-attacks thinking about it and couldn't go to sleep without watching a movie or something else distracting. The depression from the newfound realization of your mortality can only go on for so long before you have to accept it. I don't think it is something we can every fully come to terms with. I don't think a conscious self-aware being can understand non-existence. So, I think some religious people's fears stem from the idea they don't want to contemplate their faith not being true. [/ QUOTE ] Excellent post. I 100% agree with everything you said. |

Re: Fear of dying - Religious vs non-religious people
I am not nor have I ever been religious, so I can only give my perspective. I am in no way scared of dying, I am scared of dying a death that is long and painful. I think one reason why religious people would be more scared of death is that they feel a certain amount of "pressure" to act in accordance with what they feel will get them to heaven, which is probably very hard since it is not something that is measurable. "Have I lived a good enough life to go to heaven?" That is something I have never worried about.
