Re: Would you put your life on the line?
I was thinking more along the lines of walking away = not neutral, you get to keep your life, which has a set value.
By OP, if that value is less than 490 mil, you would be dumb to walk away, otherwise walking away is the way to go. If walking away = 0 value, then taking bet would be 9.8$M +EV, yer right. I also suck at teh maths, so whatever yo. I think the real level is someone saying they wouldn't take 490M$ for 1 little toe, at the age of 31. |

Re: Would you put your life on the line?
I'd do it for 1 in 10, and I'd pick number one, because I am number 1!!!!

Re: Would you put your life on the line?
[ QUOTE ]
Walking back, mildly drunk, a friend and I got into a discussion about a hypothetical scenario, where both of us had very different views. It's not really relevant who thought what, but one of us said a definite yes to the scenario and the other said no. Here's the scenario: There's a guy pointing a gun at your head. He has a suitcase with $10m in it. He offers you to pick a number from 1 to 50. You then have to write it down. He then has one attempt at guessing that number. If he guesses right, he pulls the trigger. If not, he hands you a suitcase with $10m and you walk away unscathed. You do not have to pick a number. You can leave immediately instead. Do you gamble with your life? If yes, at what point would your answer become a no (i.e. pick a number from 1-40, or 1-25, or 1-10. If no, at what point would you take the gamble? (1-100, 1-1,000, etc) [/ QUOTE ] LOLOLOL gamble your life |

Re: Would you put your life on the line?
I'd do it for a coinflip and perhaps even worse. I think winning $10 million would easily double the value of my life, maybe even more. If I had $10 million I could actually go and do things that I truly enjoy doing and experience things I might otherwise never have had the opportunity to experience. Heck with $10 million dollars I might even manage to get laid.

Re: Would you put your life on the line?
[ QUOTE ]
I think the real level is someone saying they wouldn't take 490M$ for 1 little toe, at the age of 31. [/ QUOTE ] I'm a pretty big advocate of utility theory and will bring it up at random times. Often when drunk. There's a class of people who for whatever reason assume that I'm trying to put a monetary value on every aspect of life and feel that this is an ethical wrong on the order of pissing on baby puppies. They then try to argue with me and it always devolves to them making absurd claims that they frequently contradict by their actions in their day-to-day life. A perfect example is ElSapo claiming that he wouldn't pick a number in the OP if the odds were the same as the odds of him dying in a car accident. |
