What was Hitler's sense of humor like?

[/ QUOTE ]

It was dark and malevolent as you might imagine. No one could make him laugh as frequently as Joseph Goebbel's his old Party comrade and propoganda minister.

There is not much written about his sense of humor, but there is one story I remember that had Hitler in tears. I searched for it through my books in vain. But from memory it was about Goebbel's telling Hitler about an old opposionist newspaper editor who used to print unfavorable stories about Hitler before he assumed power.

This man was traveling home from business or something. And Goebbel's had arranged for the man to instead be flown to the Easter front. Goebbel's explaing the man's reaction to Hitler upon realization that he would be forcibly take to the Easter front is what had him in tears.

There was something on the History Channel a few weeks ago, something about The lost words of hitler...all those silent films you see of hitler around his estate, etc...well I guess they came up with the technology to see what a person would be saying, it was v intresting and Hitler actually had a pretty decent sense of humor.

This is where Hitler also may have learned to make such dramatic speeches. He would imitate the grandiose hand gestures that he had seen all his life from attending Opera. It also taught him how to deliver a speech in a perfect pitch, tone, and tempo for maximum effect on an audience.

[/ QUOTE ]

According to that history channel documentary I was watching he was trained by a magician, supposedly there is a book by one of the people being interviewed, about this (seriously)...

I did find this on a website, about the "magician" guy:

"All of this changed dramatically at the end of the 1919 when Hitler met Dietrich Eckart. Most biographers have underestimated the influence that Eckart exerted on Hitler. He was the wealthy publisher and editor-in-chief of an anti-semitic journal which he called In Plain German. Eckart was also a committed occultist and a master of magic. As an initiate, Eckart belonged to the inner circle of the Thule Society as well as other esoteric orders.

There can be no doubt that Eckart - who had been alerted to Hitler by other Thulists - trained Hitler in techniques of self confidence, self projection, persuasive oratory, body language and discursive sophistry. With these tools, in a short period of time he was able to move the obscure workers party from the club and beer hall atmosphere to a mass movement. The emotion charged lay speaker became an expert orator, capable of mesmerizing a vast audience."

1. Have you seen the recent documentary that uses advanced lip reading techniques to interpret many of Hitler's private conversations?

2. You talk about Hitler's speech making ability. Have you ever seen an entire Hitler speech. These are available at the Holocaust museum and are very eye opening in the manner you describe.

3. Have you ever seen the episode of either Night Gallery or Twilight Zone where an aging Hitler is brought back to youth only to be killed by a couple of his victims?

Bump for vanwely's questions.

Found it. Its called Hitler Private World. Heres some info and quotes (links below):

It has languished in archives since the war after being found by the US Office of Strategic Services in the cellars under the Berghof. The film shows very different Hitler from the strident orator who led Germany into war. At ease among his guests, he cracks jokes and talks animatedly about his love for cinema — his tastes included Mickey Mouse.

"He is also seen teasing Braun about a screening in his cinema at the Berghof. "I understand you didn't like the movie last night," he says. "I know what you want. You want Gone with the Wind.""

Much of the footage is taken on a terrace at the Bavarian retreat, with Hitler and his guests relaxing in the sunlight. He finds time to flirt with Braun, saying: "What are you filming an old man for? I should be filming you."

But the war was never far away. "You talk about a dress that does not fit … imagine my problems," he says with exasperation to his lover.

What also becomes clear is that Hitler did not hold back from criticising his inner circle. He is scathing about Himmler's enthusiasm for archaeological digs to establish the origins of the Aryan race but reserved his bitchiest remark for Goering.

"I looked at him across the dining table and then I knew that what they say was true," he says, "that pigs eat the flesh of their own."

Link (where I pulled the quotes and gives info on the documentary)

Dietrich Eckart was not a magician he was a heroin addicted poet and one of the early members of the National Socialists. Hitler had a gift of oratory way before meeting Eckart. In fact Eckart introduced Hitler to the National Socialists after witnessing a speech he had spontaneously given. If Eckart was so good at oratory then why not simply take command of the National Socialists himself?

Hitler did work with a certain hypnotist/magician later on to refine his techniques, but all he did with Eckart was work on his anti-semitic propoganda.

People always tend to think there is someone behind the scenes directing history as it seems impossible that one man could accomplish so much.

Edit: I now found on youtube this Hitler's Private World. And they even mention the name of the hypnotist/magician that I just mentioned. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skFUprHRmrA

Hitler's impact on the world is still incredible (especially if you are Jewish). There are Jewish communities throughout the world because of him (even in China) and Israel might not be around.

It seemed to be a perfect storm that allowed Hitler to come into power, starting with the blame Germany got assessed for WWI that devestated the economy.

Interesting thread...and I am Jewish.

Dietrich Eckart was not a magician

[/ QUOTE ] Magician as in Aleister Crowley, not David Copperfield. From wiki:
[ QUOTE ]
He was an occultist, interested in Germanic mythology and magic.

Do you guys actually hate Hitler? Do you hate all people who were mean in history? I am indifferent towards Hitler. He is something from the past. I am still mad about the Vietnam War though, and I do hate those guys. But WWII goes beyond my imaginary cut off point.

[/ QUOTE ]

yah, I am disgusted, but I cant say I feel hatred. Strangely though this doesnt only apply to stuff that happened in the relatively distant past. I dont feel any hate towards osama, or saddam. I dont remember having an emotional reaction to 9/11 and still dont. Im detached from it. Its a world event that I acknowledge effects my life, but it just doesnt get a rise out of me.
