Then a new VP was hired in our group and he convinced everyone to pitch in for a gift certificate to the boss's favorite restaurant. Right before the holiday, we give our boss the card with the gift certificate in it. After he opens and reads it, he makes this attempt at humor, "You all didn't have to do this. Making your lives miserable every day is thanks enough for me." Cue awkward silence. Oddly, we haven't gotten him anything since.
