Econ probably won't preclude you from most finance jobs. However, if OSU has a business school and econ is not in the business school that might hurt you from a networking/job search point of view. Also, if you do finance you will probably get exposure to econ and accounting vs probably only econ in an econ major.

Also, when you are applying for jobs, do not put "the" osu on your resume. Employers will just laugh at that.

IMO, an econ major by itself will kill you if your'e attempting to get into any equity analysis or IB position (those which aren't macro-oriented, at least). Employers want you to start contributing right away and don't want to waste their times on someone with no direct finance knowledge. This is true of where I'm currently at, where I've worked in the past, and where I've interviewed at over the past year.

For interviewing jobs (and getting hired), I agree with this list.

But if you want to invest on your own, hands down accounting.

I'm Australian so the situation is different here obviously but here are my thoughts.

Like a lot of people have mentioned, a Finance major with an Economics minor is very popular. A lot of Finance concepts have their root in Economics so the two complement each other nicely, although not directly. Accounting is basically a separate world altogether. I didn't mind Accounting, I just didn't want to be 50 and realise I was an accountant. lol.

In terms of interest, I think Economics is easily way more interesting than Finance. Microeconomics in particular will be interesting for poker players, with a lot of decision theory under uncertainty, game theory etc. However, Finance will be much more useful when it comes to getting jobs. SO basically, while you're at uni, you'll wish you did Econ, but once you graduate you'll wish you did Finance. Hence,I think having the major in your career path while a minor in your interest is a good combination. And it's not like Finance is dead boring either.
