I went to the new MGM yesterday and while it was pretty nice I really do not see what all the hub bub is about. I mean the floors in the elevators are cool and the walls in certain areas have that 'react to sound' technology which again is cool, but the poker room IMO was not very spectacular. I am biased though and play LHE and they did not have a LHE game going. They have 8 tables of which I think about 5 had NLHE running, they donot have comps, they do not have a BBJ. The place was pretty nice, but small had some nice TVS up on the wall which were not on. The floor said he was trying to get his boss to let him run SNG's and getting comps I told him he better or his action is dead. We went to Greektown right after we left there and they had 11 tables running various games of which some LHE games were included. They started a 125.00 tourney as I was playing and got 85 people to join so first was like 3500.00. So there was another 9 tables full (they had to break up a table to fit the tourney) They also announce they are doing away with the poker pro machines which was met with an applause from those of us in the crowd and I am going to assume they are going to add a couple more tables. That brings the table total up to 20 or 21.

I get why some of you like MMC, but as far as game selection, number of players etc there is no place better than Greektown . The floor sucks, the dealers typically suck except for guys like Joe, but they have comps (those new wings I had again yesterday which are good) usually a pretty solid BBJ (48k yesterday) and tournys throughout the week AND there are things to do around there (hello Old Shillelagh's is right across the street, Comerica park is a 5 minute walk away and the food is pretty solid)

Again I am not knocking you guys for liking MMC I like it to, but for action, selection, comps and the BBJ you have to give it up for Greektown.

MGM GRAND DETROIT PROJECT -- 800 MILLION -- $800,000,000.00

I was never in the buildings before they were casinos so I can't say. The MGM is a brand spankin' new building and cost $800,000. The old building was the IRS building I believe.

Greektown is off Randolph street in the heart of, ahm...Greektown; downtown Detroit.

$800,000 is quite the bargain this day and age.

Okay, d'you know how when you know a little kid and then you don't see them for a long time and they're always a little kid in your mind but they've become fully grown adults? The MGM and the MCC are like that for me. I'm still thinking our small, 3 storey IRS building and the WonderBread building, not these wonderful edifices. I'm totally impressed, and I hope they're successful for Detroit 'cause ghod knows the city needs it.

this may be the only thread i've ever read on 2+2 where people write about bad beat jackpots as if they're a good thing

I'd rather not have a BBJ. Fortunately G'town doesn't have a $5-10 or even a "real" $2-5nl running anymore

Why do you think BBJ are a bad thing?
For 1 they entice action. Someone sitting with JJ is more likey to try and see the river if there is a bad beat beat even if they know they are beat. It has to figure in on your implieds.
For 2 it is only a buck for gods sake. Maybe if you play 2-4LHE or a 100 max buy in NLHE game I can see someone being a nit about it, but if you play any kind of level even close to break even it is not a big deal.
For 3 it brings in the mediocre player. Who doesnt want that?
For 4 it adds to the juice of the game.

I am confused by your statements I mean I am not going to bash someone for their opinion, but just do not understand peoples stance on this.

I made it out to the new MGM this past Saturday night. I hated the old MGM basically because they didn't have a poker room so i thought i would give the new one a try. I went with friends who don't play poker so i knew i was not going to get a chance to play but i did check out the room. It's small but it had plenty of action. The casino as a whole is another story.
The building is very nice but they haven't been open long enough to trash it yet. The casino is nice but the service was beyond horrible. It took me 30 miutes to get my first beer at the bar and there were only 3 people ahead of me. By the time i got my beer there were 30 people behind me and some of them may still be waiting. There were 2 bartenders and one went on break as soon as i got into line. They had numerous bar backs behind them but i guess they weren't allowed to serve and the lone bartender was a bit slow to say the least.
We played a few table games while the girls played slots. Nothing special to report here besides that everytime i got up my girlfriend was asking for money to replace what she was donating to the slots. I think i ended up about $50.00 even with the vaccuum of a girlfriend losing on damn slots.
I also learned that if you want a drink skip the bar and order from the waitresses milling around, they were pretty quick about things.
After a few hours of gambling we decided to grab some quick food at their little food court thing and head over to Greektown. Big mistake here. We split up for the food we wanted and again no one was served in less than 30 minutes. Out of 8 people 4 could not get what they wanted because they were out of it and no one was happy with the food. Most of it ended up being thrown out. I got 2 slices of pizza that i must have told them to burn the hell out of and a panini that was hot as hell on the outside and frozen on the inside. Oh well it was a food court and by now i was drunk anyways and who needs food when you're hungry?
Traffic getting in and out was horrible but i think that was mainly due to the fact that they are new and people are coming to check it out. This shouldn't be a problem in a few months. We made it over to Greektown and ended up having a good time there and had some good food in Greektown itself.
I was impressed with MGM's new look but it's really the same old crappy MGM casino just in a better dress. I may go back to play poker over there just to check out the action but Greektown and Motorcity are still much better of a casino experience than MGM. I also believe that when MC gets their new digs open it just may take most of the action away from the other casinos. All MC needs is a nicer place to get the advantage and that is exactly what they will have very soon.

No way MC will ever be nicer than MGM (other than the poker room). They've already opened the new gaming area. Sure it's nice, but doesn't compare to MGM's brand new casino. The MC hotel will open in Nov, I think.

I visited the MGM room late one night. Overall I would give the room a poor rating and will continue playing at Motor City.

Pros:

Comfortable chairs.
Nice lighting.
Restroom adjacent.
Small waiting area with nice seating.

Cons:

Next to busy nightclub.
You might think this would bring in some money, but the room is not welcoming upon entering.
Floor is very inexperienced, no control.
Chip desk/cashier is more like a teller window at the racetrack. Slow and inadequate.
Witnessed a fight there and security handled the situation very poorly imo.
Difficult to get to from parking area.

it may only be a buck more in rake, but that adds up. i'm against anything that makes me pay more rake just so i can enter into a lottery. i am not convinced it brings more bad players into a game, or that it stimulates action. it might, but i think those points are very debatable. it is not a big deal and i won't not play a game just because it is BBJ, but if i had a choice, i would rather play a non-BBJ game. back when partypoker had tons of BBJ games and huge jackpots, thousands of winning players bypassed them on a daily basis.
