Re: better NBA coach?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I'm gonna go with the players (Shaq, All-Star games, etc) that swear that Riles is an amazing coach. [/ QUOTE ] I heard an interview just yesterday on the radio here in Miami where Riley was going on and on about how amazing Avery is though. He pretty much said the game is passing him by and Avery will be one of the coaches taking it to new levels. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not knocking AJ at all. If he can come close to this level for the next two years, I'll give him all the respect in the world. I'm just not ready to vault him into the Pantheon until he does it a tiny bit longer. |

Re: better NBA coach?
Bulldog,
[ QUOTE ] I'm only asking, because I read some ridiculous statements in the NBA Finals threads putting forth the idea that Avery was better. [/ QUOTE ] I don't remember all of the details of the thread, mainly b/c I wasn't in the middle of it but what I agreed with regarding the two coaches was that Riley's impact on the series wouldn't be far greater than Avery's. As far as coaching level goes, Avery is showing signs of a great coach...not only is he a great teacher but he manages games incredibly, something the great coaches have always done and need to do to win. But the man simply hasn't had enough time to be fairly judged as you obviously know. |

Re: better NBA coach?
I'm pretty sure AJ could probally coach a list of other stars in the league. I don't know if the same can be said for D'Antoni b/c of the style he plays. All AJ needs is a couple good defensive players and then a super star and he has a winner. D'antoni needs a point guard play maker which seem to be pretty rare this day and age.

Re: better NBA coach?
Obviously Avery Johnson is the best coach in the NBA. He won the Coach of the Year award didn't he?

what a rediculous poll. It works much better if you phrase it like this:

Re: better NBA coach?
[ QUOTE ]
I answered Riley w/o thought. This answer is easy. But I also think the question isn't very good, why are we comparing a basically first year coach to a seasoned HOF veteran coach? Let Avery have a career and then maybe there is a discussion, until then I don't think there is really anything to talk about. [/ QUOTE ] |

Let Avery Johnson hit puberty and then we can talk about it.
