I'm sure that I've tipped many people who rarely receive tips while performing their jobs. However, tipping the guy who sold him the ticket is just plain retarded. If your friend really feels a compulsion to give away some of his winnings, he should donate it back to the charity.

What's the rake on this raffle?
I'm guessing it's something on the order of 50%, and you gave up $100 already in EV by buying the ticket. Did you want to donate more to them than that?

Thanks for all the replies so far ... here's how I think it's gonna end up. We were figuring it out -- and IF (big IF) they sold all 1000 tickets at $200 a piece, that's $200k - we figured between the $25k, the $50k and the rest (around $17k) that they're paying out, they're STILL making over $100k for the organization, so giving a percentage back to the organization is probably out of the question. And, the guy who sold him the ticket IS a member of the organization (obviously) and a friend of his, so I told him it's really his choice - he's probably gonna throw him a few hundred bucks ... I told him $500 would be the most I would give him. As for the guy who bet is was a check, when he gets it, I'll let ya know !!!

By the way - various churches in Philly and NJ were doing (and some still do) this sort of thing for years - all coinciding with the lottery's Daily Number.
I used to buy (donate) $100 which was good for the year - and it was a similar situation where I received a raffle ticket with a 3 digit number on it. I hit it once for like $500 - but it was a good fundraiser for the church, I imagine. And I'm sure it goes on all over ...
