I told him that in larger poker tournaments players usually tip 3-5% of their winnings. I didn't know if he would be comfortable with tipping that much to someone who simply sold him the ticket -- what would a decent tip be for him to give the seller ???

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm usually someone who errs on the side of tipping when I don't have to, rather than looking like a douche for "stiffing" someone who is doing a service for me. I'm sure that I've tipped many people who rarely receive tips while performing their jobs.

However, tipping the guy who sold him the ticket is just plain retarded. If your friend really feels a compulsion to give away some of his winnings, he should donate it back to the charity.

What's the rake on this raffle?

I'm guessing it's something on the order of 50%, and you gave up $100 already in EV by buying the ticket.

Did you want to donate more to them than that?

I'm taking my check for $25,000 straight to the bank.

[/ QUOTE ]

Check. Right.

djdez, you got an envelope stuffed with cash, right?

Just because some Two Streeter is running this for his New Year's Brigade, doesn't make it legal.

I wouldn't be bringing that to the bank unless I was putting it in my safety deposit box.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'd bet you $1,000 that he got a check.

[/ QUOTE ]

He hasn't picked it up yet, but from what he thinks - it's going to be cash ...

Thanks for all the replies so far ... here's how I think it's gonna end up. We were figuring it out -- and IF (big IF) they sold all 1000 tickets at $200 a piece, that's $200k - we figured between the $25k, the $50k and the rest (around $17k) that they're paying out, they're STILL making over $100k for the organization, so giving a percentage back to the organization is probably out of the question.

And, the guy who sold him the ticket IS a member of the organization (obviously) and a friend of his, so I told him it's really his choice - he's probably gonna throw him a few hundred bucks ... I told him $500 would be the most I would give him.

As for the guy who bet is was a check, when he gets it, I'll let ya know !!!

By the way - various churches in Philly and NJ were doing (and some still do) this sort of thing for years - all coinciding with the lottery's Daily Number.

I used to buy (donate) $100 which was good for the year - and it was a similar situation where I received a raffle ticket with a 3 digit number on it. I hit it once for like $500 - but it was a good fundraiser for the church, I imagine.

And I'm sure it goes on all over ...
