Does the dealer have any authority to muck a hand that is still live, like in this example?

[/ QUOTE ]

This is exactly what I was wondering. This situation occurred at the TAJ where my friend was facing a large 3 bet allin on the flop and was trying to decide what to do. After maybe a minute the dealer called the clock. My friend then kind of got into with the dealer, while trying to make the big decision. I didn't think about it at the time, but would the dealer have been able to physically muck a protected hand, if my friend decided to disregard what the dealer said? I'm like 95% sure the floor would have to be there for to do that.

P.S. Friend layed down KJ on a KJT flop, and villain showed pocket 3s. Friend goes on supertilt.

Al,
You did good, but in simple terms the dealers job is to:
1. SHUT UP AND DEAL
2. Keep table order
3. make sure bets and side pots are right
4. SHUT UP AND DEAL
5. Push pot to winning player

lol you don't even have to list the rules, just say "Dealer, you aren't involved in the hand, put your watch away, and shut up."

I've only seen one dealer at the Taj (or anywhere in AC) call the clock on the player. She called the clock on my friend (who is a dealer as am I) and cost herself a $10 tip. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same person, but her name escapes me. I think she was a black woman though, maybe in her late 20's.

FWIW when I used to deal if a player wanted to call the clock on a fellow player I would call the floor to let him/her initiate a clock, and make a point to tell the floor the approximate amount of time said player had already spent on the decision - I would never had instituted a clock myself, my particular brand of dealing would call for prompting a player that was taking a long amount of time on a decision by reminding the player "Sir, the bet is $145 to you." "It's your action, Sir." etc.

Being from a player background myself, I never saw the point of trying to hurry a decision for a significant amount of money in NL cash games, but I have actually told several people in LHE games taking an inordinate amount of time on a decision to "Fold, call or raise buddy, there's not a lot to it." or something similiar

Started a new gig last week. Inquired about their clocking protocal the first day. Was told that if and only if a player asks, call the floor and let them do it.
