well, they've won the division for what, a decade straight? i understand winning every game would be nice, but maybe torre doesnt want to use rivera like you suggest? he pitches a ton of innings as it is.

If you had any type of reading comprehension skills whatsoever you would be able to infer that my point is that someone suggested that Torre doesn't want to use Rivera optimally because Rivera already pitches enough innings as is so I replied with a statement implying Torre uses him extremely suboptimally by throwing him out there in the 9th up by 3.


Do you realize just how hard it is for a team to lose a 3 run game in the 9th and how much the difference between the best closer ever and a bum really makes?

however, it will take 20+ years and a lot of wrangling with agents and front offices for closers to be used the way you want them to be, so i suggest accepting it, rather than getting upset

closers who get saves get paid. guys who have closer stuff who don't save games don't get paid as much. it's that simple, and until that changes, baseball won't change. papelbon isn't arb-eligible so it won't matter now, but i have to suspect he has a handshake agreement with boston to pay him not based on saves but based on performance only.

You think in the playoffs that both Torre and Rivera are well aware that they are hurting their team using them the way they are but have accepted that there's nothing they can do about it because it will cost Mariano Rivera money?
