Simple quick question
You are playing low limit hold'em. You have a very strong hand, have been betting it all the way, and end up heads up on the river. The board goes runner runner flush. Your opponent did not raise you on the turn when the third flush card appeared. You are first to act on the river when the fourth flush card appears. You have a strong hand, but not a flush. Or alternatively, you have a non-nut flush with one of your cards. The pot could be medium-small or quite large, since you have been betting and raising.
Is this bet/fold, check/call, check/raise, check/fold, bet/call? -J |

Re: Simple quick question
okay, i'll bite. check/call.
I'm not sure if i have a flush or what exactly my hand is (do i have a full house?). I'm not sure if the pot is medium-small or quite large. I definitely don't have any reads on my opponent. I'm going with check/call, but feel free to make some assumptions and tell me i'm wrong. is this post supposed to be a joke? I mean, it's silly, but not extreme enough to actually be funny. |

Re: Simple quick question
Your hand doesnt beat a flush or a nut flush. Perhaps, sometimes you were betting a set of fives and end up making a five high flush, or just a set of fives.
I am not joking in the post, it is a situation that comes up and I'm not sure what the best play is from both positions. It is not clear to me, hence the post. -J |

Re: Simple quick question
I think a read is important, but i'm still going with check call out of position.

Re: Simple quick question
For me, out of position, check/call. In position, call or check.

Re: Simple quick question
It is between bet/fold, and bet/call.
This is pretty much the clarkmeister theorem situation. |

Re: Simple quick question
Clarkmeister that river! Depending on your reads of course.

Re: Simple quick question
The default play would be bet/fold, but lately I find it hard to bet/fold because I always end up calling, fearing the bet/fold is so obvious they take shots at it. So in that case I'd check/call. I think it's either bet/fold or check/call. Bet/call is not a good line imo. You sometimes win one more, but when you lose it's two, or occasionally you win 2 from a bluff.

Re: Simple quick question
Barring any specifics, I take a Clarkmeister line here.

Re: Simple quick question
Without reads Its tough to say. Heres what I mean.
I had a similar situation happen in a live 4/8 game. It was about 3 a.m. and the table was 5 or 6 handed. The # 2 seat and myself had been holding over the #10 seat all night and we were'nt exactly being humble about it, rubbing it in at every opportunity. Before that night I didnt know there were so many shades of red. This hand happened after his third buy in within 2 hours. UTG +1 calls (tight passive player) folds round to SB (#10 completely tilted)who raises I re-raise In the BB with black sevens, UTG folds, # 10 Re-raises defiantly, I call Flop is 864 with two spades # 10 bets, I raise, he re-raises, I call (I felt like he was due to try and push one through, I was wrong) Turn is the 4 of spades he bets, I quickly call saying "You better hope a spade doesnt fall on the river because I hold a big one" Sure enough T of spades falls on the river and a chuckle goes around the table. # 10s cheeks begin to glow again as he hesitates before he bets. I think it through and call. He turns up red kings. I say "I tried to tell you buddy" |
