Re: The Economist article about online gambling
[ QUOTE ]
One million jobs were lost? How many new jobs are there in the US since 1993? What would you rather do, work in a plastics molding plant or be a white collar worker? Where are the new jobs? Why do people keep coming here, legally or not? Cite your sources before you spout nonsense. [/ QUOTE ] That was a NET loss of one million GOOD jobs. Those were GOOD manufacturing jobs. Here are some sources, I wasn't even going to post anything because most of this stuff is just general knowledge (like the sky is blue): http://www.epinet.org/content.cfm/briefingpapers_bp147 |

lol @ the pro-trade-barriers guy trade barriers bad is basically an uncontested fact among serious economists - keynesian, neoclassical, austrian, or anything else for that matter. goes back to adam smith and david ricardo. or do you have some sort of refutation of ricardo's theory of comparative advantage? if you do i'd like to hear it. [/ QUOTE ] haha, no one is saying trade barriers are good for the world economy. The rest of the world enjoys taking our jobs. We have created a booming economy in China at our own expense. There is no way a net loss of almost one million good jobs is good for our economy! How can you dispute that? |

Those jobs are in china so that manufacturers can produce cheaper goods meaning the 100 million people who didn't lose their jobs have better purchasing power. |

Re: The Economist article about online gambling
When there was a big surge in call centre closures here in the UK last few years, i remember a reporter asking something like "what can we do to stop these companies taking our jobs abroad?" to Tony Blair.
In one of the few moments i like Blair, he said something along the lines of "we exist in a global marketplace, it is not the job of government to stop jobs moving to another country. Its our job to help you find your next job..." followed by stats of how much they invested in various New Deal programs to help people to get work. For every job 'lost' overseas, that is: a, one less person planning to come to America/UK to find work b, one person on the unemployment line But the gains in such a world market are undisputed as being positive for all parties. How has Americas economy performed since trade barriers were extinguished? How about unemployment? Is it a win win, or a really good tradeoff because i doubt its a lose lose. Also, what happens in cases where barriers are put up? I know of no theory, so please contradict, but i remember when GW Bush put a tax on steel import to help the US steel industry. By doing so he almost crippled manufacturing industries, especially the car industry. |
