Default Future of Online Poker

Hi,

First time poster here. I'm wondering what you guys think the future of online poker will be (particularly NL hold'em). From what I have seen, the low limit tables are still very numerous with plenty of fish. However, starting from 5/10 NL+, I start to see limited tables infested with regulars and multitablers (these observations are at stars and FTP). Do you think in a few years online poker will be a wasteland with multitabling regulars grinding it out amongst themselves without a single fish? Do you think poker has reached its peak or will its popularity continue to grow?

The reason I ask is because I am truly considering a career in online poker. I am applying to dental school for next year and basically have a year off to commit myself fully to playing poker. Depending on my results, I will make a decision whether to go to dental school or to play poker. However, assuming I do make a huge profit at the end of this year, I do not want to sacrafice a career in dentistry without at least having some kind of idea of the future of online poker. Thanks.

(Btw, I am currently a low stakes player hoping to get to 10/20 nl by the end of next year.)

i think its got a couple of more years

but the future will sadly be at low limit online against the highschoolers and college fish.

live play in vegas will always be good, just long and boring and actual work

Be a dentist for God's sake -- contribute to society.

But on the other hand -- lotta marketing going on outside the US -- the tank is filling back up...

I think live play is out of the question for me. After discovering multitabling, live play is just so slow and does seem too much like work .

Why do you feel Vegas has more longevity? Slower rate at which fish lose their money, and casual tourists dropping by?

Don't give up yet. There's a lot we can do to try to bring online poker back to the mainstream in the US. Check out the legislation forum, particularly TheEngineer's posts and the weekly action thread.

Hi perfection and welcome,

I do hope you’re joking. Concentrate on your proposed dentistry career and just play poker on the side.

Who knows what is going to happen to poker, particularly on-line. Personally, I see no reason to think poker will decline. It has been played for hundreds of years and all the internet has done is bring a great game to people that otherwise would not get to a poker room or casino.

The real boom has levelled off but I truly believe the problems of fish accessing sites will get resolved. Internet gambling has been developed and you cannot undo it.

The internet is a wondrous invention, for all its faults, and development will continue. The USA (some congressmen anyway) will at some stage admit defeat and you will all get back to playing. It is just a matter of time.

Don’t give up on a great career in dentistry though.

Its BB/100 hands is so much better live. You can find a good table, with lots of tourist, people get drunk playing live and they are there to gamble. Vegas has the biggest selection of games so you can always find an extremely profitable table on the strip.

I've had some of my best days live making over $2k on 1 table of $1/$3.

Vegas will always be around, its just now there is poker instead of craps and black jack for drunk gamblers to throw their money away on.

Don't be an idiot!!!!! GO TO DENTAL SCHOOL!!!! You can still play part-time and make money. Get you schooling out of the way before you have a wife and kids.

My two cents
