What advice would you give to someone recently playing for a living?
Hello.
Recently I took the decision to leave university for a variety of personal reasons. At the minute im unemployed and I'm not really looking for a job as such while I sort my life out. Over the past few months I have made reasonably consistent money playing the low/mid-level SNG's online and Im also going along OK in live play. While I'm realistic enough to know I'm probably not going to be the next WSOP champion I am confident I am good enough to grind out a living playing the game while I sort myself out so this is the route I plan on taking, at least for the short term. However, as for the actual time/bankroll/wages management part of playing as my sole income I am pretty clueless. So what I am asking for is the experiences of anybody who is or has recently turned professional to help me out and maybe give me a bit of guidance if possible. I know this is a dangerous route to go down but I think with a little help I should be ok. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much, Matt.

I am not a professional, as a matter of fact, I just started playing online more often now. I used to go to casino occasionally and play some online game just for fun.
here is a few things I can think of: 1. DO NOT play outside your bankroll 2. Have at least 2 months living expense saved up 3. Have around 800 BB

Two non-financial tips
Allocoate a portion of your new "work day" to 1. Studying the game(books articles, forums), and analysing your play. 2. Have an exercise routine for your body and to keep your head clear. I am amazed how often I read how much the inclsuion of regular exercise and a proper diet has improved online players' mental sharpness...

Hello! being a pro is ups and downs. You can earn a lot of money very fast but you can also lose them. In my opinion a lot of people playing for high stakes, having more money now than ever before, will soon loose it. Its definitely not wrong to take a shot on being pro but never forget that you might loose a lot if you play above your bakroll, of which im sure almost everybody does. So my advise to you when everything is going well is: DONT THINK YOU ARE THE BEST POKER PLAYER EVER. NEVER RISK YOUR BANKROLL. As long as you dont forget this you will probably not do yourself any harm.
If you become an online pro dont forget that its other things to life than poker. Try to socialise and meet people because you are cut of from society if you dont go to a job or in your case university. It might sound obvious but it is definitely affecting your mental health to cut yourself of from the real world. Good luck

When I went pro, I had 2 bad months to start with. Partly because money suddenly means something and u get a bit weak but mostly because u are not used to play long hours and dont have a good way of dealing with this. You play for 5 hours and runs bad, go out with your friend and drink 999 beers and come home and play for 4 hours more running bad... things like that.
Most advice I read in this thread are really important. Have savings in bank that u can reload with. Be prepared to not withdraw anything for 2 months. Excercise your body... etc... all good things to remember but really hard to do. By the way, it was 2.5y since I went pro and I still make more money on poker then on my regular job (that I didnt have when I went pro - but man, playing poker each day really isnt a healthy way of living...)
