Default Drinking sports drinks while playing live

This morning I went to my chiropractor(who I haven't seen in a while)for a treatment on my back and neck. I just happened to mention to him that I play live poker about 3 times a week for about 3-5 hours at a stretch. He started to tell me about how he had read somewhere that when chess players play for like 3 hours at a time that they actually burn way more calories than one would think from the intense concentration and focus etc. He recommended to me that I drink plenty of sports drinks in addition to obvious high amounts of water for hydration. But particularly the sports type drinks. I know that after a live session I to fell fatigued at times but had no idea that I may be burning as many calories as I thought I was merely from intesnse mental concentration. I eat and drink plenty of water when I play. Anyone have any info on this possible caloric burning at all? I guess it is possible but not sure.

Judging from the average weight of professional live poker players, I don't think what you say about calories can be true.
Poker pro may seriously be the profession with the highest per capita consumption of gastric bypass surgery.

I remember hearing a similar sort of thing about Go. World contenders were weighed in before and after a long match, with weight being lost during the game.

However, with respect to poker, I don't think this would be as prominent. In chess or go, you are constantly thinking and applying (hopefully) full mental efforts. With poker, a lot of it is waiting to be dealt a hand, and many of the hands we play (I know you play 4/8ish limit ) are more or less on autopilot.

I'm sure it's a good idea to maintain proper hydration tho... just my two cents.

Chess is a much tougher sport. I would stick to juices and lay off the hardcore energy drinks. Also stay away from the performance enhancing drugs. They'll just leave you short stacked.

I agree with Diana, energy drinks will crash you but I think he's speaking more along the lines of Gatorade. That said I'd still prefer juice. Better sugars and vitamins, and you only need the salt in sports drinks when your running a marathon in Death Valley.

Ugh. Neither chess or poker are sports. Just because ESPN decided to start showing poker didn't turn it into a sport.
