kenny werner said it best, something like, if you want to hear is technique at the piano, why would you ever listen to anyone other than art tatum?

there's also an old story that charlie parker got a job as a dishwasher at a club where tatum was working just so he could hear him play every night.

I love tatum, but can't listen to too much of his playing in a single stretch.

JaBlue, wtf? how can you not like piano in jazz? it's heresy!

If you like Art Tatum, listen to all the Thelonius Monk you can get your hands on. Next level.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't know about that. BUd Powell is a much better req for someone who would enjoy Tatum. Monk's technique was awful and his playing style isn't close at all to Tatum's

Tatum's music sounds more technically impressive than Monk's.

In terms of virtuosity, yes. In terms of musical sophistication, no. Monk takes some getting used to. It's kind of like the difference between Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Miles might flub some of his notes, while Dizzy plays the hardest passages flawlessly, but Miles plays with more soul and pushes the musical boundaries.

[/ QUOTE ]

sorta, it's pretty clear that you haven't played jazz that deeply. Much of the stuff that Dizzy wrote was insanely sophisticated when it came to chord changes

it just doesn't seem as expressive to me... I won't complain about listening to it or anything, there just isn't all that much control over tone compared to other instruments

Yeah, Peterson was remarkable.

From the 7:55 mark to the end is unbelievable.

crap, not in time for edit, but Turnip it can't be heresy because jazz pianists are the natural born enemies of jazz guitarrists

Good stuff but I tend to agree with Turinpmonster that “pure technique” or technical display is not necessarily the most pleasurable to listen to especially at one long sitting. The finger moves, dexterity, and speed of play are amazing.

Although I did enjoy the Oscar Peterson medley (and Art Tatum); I think I would rather listen to Bob Marley.

uh, well, comparing the two of them is an apples to celery comparison, cause that's how far apart they are. As a tenor saxohponist, that'd be like me comparing Stan Getz to John Coltrane or Joe Henderson
