This should be a discussion about which performance is #2. The Wood game is certainly #1. Factor in that the astros came in with the best offense in the league with Biggio, Bagwell and Alou all in their prime, and Bell leading the league in hitting. Wood made tham all look TERRIBLE.

They looked like they didn't even see a baseball. Just about ANY other 3rd baseman makes that play. Orie could barely bend over.

I have this game on tape, and break it out whenever I start hating myself for being a cubs fan.

The Wood game was incredible. Possibly the best ever

I remember Dwight Gooden holding the Cubs to an infield single once ... awesome game ... but not nearly as amazing as the Wood Game

Given the time of year that it is, I was hoping this was going to be about playoff performances, not often meaningless regular season games witnessed live by very few people (case in point, IIRC the Wood 20K game was in the middle of a weekday).

In that vein and completely going by memory, I've gotta go with Jack Morris in 1991, game 7 and I think he dominated in the playoffs, period that year (although he kinda sucked ass in the playoffs with the Blue Jays). Don't get me wrong, I wanted the Braves to win, but it was a sight to behold.

Also, Tom Glavine's performance in game 6 in 1995 to win the Braves their only Series during their run was pretty epic.

And of course, Josh Beckett in Yankee Stadium in 2003.

20 strikeout games are impressive, but I think a perfect game is much more dominant.

Randy Johnson's perfecto in 2004 was pretty fantastic. He killed a good hitting Braves team. That to me is more impressive than striking out 20. Allowing no one to reach base is a sign of utter dominance. (he also struck out 13)

This is the first thing I though about it. He was absolutely on that day. Now if only he could have done that for the Mets in game 5...

For true pitching domination, I think you need to go back to the 1960s when the mound was higher. Gibson's 1.12 ERA in 1968 meant he dominated the entire season, which is one of the reasons they lowered the mound. A 1.12 is unfathomable today, although the duel between Gooden (1.53) and Tudor (1.93) in 1985 came close.

For single game performance, I think there was a classic between Koufax and Marcial that was 1-0. Someone will have to look that one up, and it might not be those two pitchers, but with the high mound, the mid-1960s was pitcher heaven.
