Counting the pot at the Aussie Millions.

I realize there's another counting the pot thread, but this was at the Crown in melbourne. Day 1 of the aussie millions main event, I was told by Seidel and Mel Judah that you can ask the dealer to count the pot. I've read on here that you cannot do that, but they insisted that you could.

Can anyone cite the rule that says either way?

The rule I would cite is "One player to a hand." It is not that uncommon for famous players to be unaware of the rules, over the years I have been amazed at the number of famous players that thought half a bet reopened the action in NL when this is something that actually affects them. There are definitely places that will allow the dealer to tell the players how much is in the pot, but there are many local customs in various rooms. The only time I have a problem with a local custom is when it isn't posted on the wall becasue they misunderstood a common rule and think they are in line with the rest of the world.

In pot limit games(tourney or cash) the dealer must tell you how much is in the pot, obviously due to the capped betting amount being the pot size.

Traditionally, in NL games the dealer is only supposed to "spread" the pot. Now this is kinda crzy since you can take your time and count each chip in the pot individually. So, most dealers will go ahead and tell you the amount in the pot for time's sake.

The one time had heard a complaint about this (the dealer announcing the amount) the floor ruled that the dealer could no longer annouce the size.

SO, as usual, it depends. Some houses will let this slide some won't. Ask the nearest tourney director or floorman and see how they are operating their event.

The dealer will never announce the size of the pot unless instructed to do so by the active player. A good dealer will know the size of the pot when asked such a question. If not asked, its a simple 'check or bet.'
In Pot Limit Tournaments, ALL dealers are required to chip up the pot before each betting round. When I say chip-up I mean, the pot amount should be easily indentifiable by all players. The player should have no need to ask the player how much is in the pot as a simple glance at the pot should suffice.

This is not true. Traditionally the dealer is to keep his hands off the pot.

There is your answer for the tournament in that casino (which the OP asked about). I have seen this done in pot limit tournaments, but it is not standard in the US (I won't begin to speculate about the history of poekr in other countries and why they might use vertain procedures over other procedures).

Exactly! It is important to find out the different rules of different casinos. Even in Australia, every casino has different rules and procedures including one casino making the button (yes dealer button) put in the small blind and act first on each betting round. Imagine my shock...

Well obviously it is different every where you go. Chipping up is not allowed in Tunica.

Bottom line, ASK.
