I used to salivate at the idea of retiring early. It is such a "baller" thing to do. Then lately, I realized, why the hell would I want to retire? I would do the same thing as I do now haha.

[/ QUOTE ]

What about time issues?

There just isn't enough time to get everything done if you also have to worry about employment.

[/ QUOTE ]
Time is always going to be an issue no matter what you do.

But I do agree with you that due to employment, most do not have enough time to do things outside their jobs. As a result, they have less time [or energy] to read to improve themselves or expand their knowledge. This is unfortunate because reading is the best activity ever. It's not expensive and the rewards is exponential to the effort/time you put into it.

This is one of the main reasons why I considered myself a very lucky person; I have time to read and actually enjoy reading.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with you here. Especially about the part about reading.

I would like to also add that people that complain or make excuses about not having enough time, never learned how to manage their time effectively. There is 168 hours in a week. I'm sure there is enough hours in that 168 to go out and start doing things that you said you didn't have "time" to do before.

I limit sleep to about 6 hours a night and given how fast I went though university I'd say I'm pretty efficient. I still have time issues. I keep a list of interesting things I'd like to do and as soon as I cross one off I add 2 or 3.

The time thing though got me thinking about where I spend my time and I realized I devote quite a bit to working out and other appearance maintenance activities. We have had the typical material success goals, the intellectual goals, and the spiritual / happiness stuff. No one has mentioned anything about physical appearance. How important is maintaining your physical appearance to your life goal?

Good point there.

I would say not enough time maintaining my physical appearance (healthiness?).

Physical goals are probably the most underrated yet nearly as important as any other goal we have.

I am in shape though. So that isn't really a problem to me.

What's retirement???

[/ QUOTE ]

I got it backwards. From age 18 or so I traveled some, spent summers on the beach working in beach bars and fishing, spent winters in Colorado ski country working nights, partying till dawn and skiing 100 days a year. Basically I partied my arse off for 15 years.
My retirement ended abruptly upon having my first child at age 35. I now must work till I die. Fortunately I love my work.
Lack of financial planning aside, I am glad I took this path. I can no longer physically do what I did at that age, my knee will not play sports as much, When I ski I see a mogul field and my mind goes wahoo!!! around the third bump my legs go " we are done for the day, you will fall down now".
My children benefited hugely from my maturity ( all things are relative), but in my 20's I wasn't wise enough to be raising kids.

It is kind of like going out to dinner and having dessert first. Which I have been known to do. Especially at a buffet, you can wait in the long lines for food or skip to the dessert table....

Chaos, cool post. Your sounds pretty nice. The boat may be a bit much, lol.

Mine would probably be pretty similar.

I'd love to have something in Colorado...either a quaint mountain cabin, or a ranch. I'm not really a rancher, or redneck or anything, but the idea of owning a decent chunk of land with a pond and maybe ATV's and horses or something sounds pretty nice.

The quaint log cabin in the Rockies should need no qualifier. I'd like to be able to work on my house upgrading it and whatnot. I'd probably own like you say, an oldish truck. I don't think I'll own great cars.

I may even like to own a smallish shop in-town somewhere and let some yound people run it and make some money just to be a nice guy.

I'd like to hopefully be healthy enough to volunteer my body, or at least donate some money to some good causes.

I'd like to take 3-4 cruises a year and obviously travel all over the world. I would like to have a cigar room in my house and a nice wine collection, as well as a well-stocked, and eclectic library. One of these rooms I would like a nice, large acquarium perhaps.

I think I can get there! For the last 3 years my fiance and I have saved 50% of our gross income. We are really stingy. We try not to blow money on stupid crap we don't need - unlike many fellow Americans who will wake up at 50 and go "ZOMG WE OWN NOTHING WTF YO!?!? WHERES THE GUMMINT TO TAKE CARE OF ME!?!?!"

This is very, very impressive. Thank you for getting this thread back on topic.

The boat is definitely not much. Think about it. Whenever someone pisses you off you can just get on the boat, pack a month's worth of food, and be completely isolated.

Speaking of a cigar room, I would love to really get into wine, and then obviously have some enormous collection of wine. Although the collecting of the wine would be difficult, re: drinking the wine.

I'm also envisioning a jacuzzi with a view of untouched forest. That would be so great to go out in the middle of winter, pop a Magic hat, and just sit in the hot time on a cold Sunday morning. Jesus that would be great.

I guess I'd also have to get into crossword puzzles, too. I feel like every somewhat intelligent older person does crosswords from the New York Times, but they are whoa, way too hard for me.

I'd want season tickets to the Golden State Warriors, anywhere in the lower bowl would be nice. I'd be that old guy there at every game, one the players know by face, the guy riding and schooling the rooks on their mistakes throughout the game but in a grandfatherly sort of way. I wouldn't be too concerned with dress, I wouldn't splurge on clothes but the ones I have will be good quality. I wouldn't eat expensive but not in an unhealthy way either. But I would have a nice luxury car, a Mercedes, probably, assuming my tastes won't change over the years. That's a pretty large assumption to make, but how can you go wrong with a Mercedes?

San Francisco is too cold. I love hot weather, and I'd probably be perfectly at home in Mexico. But I love the Bay Area too much, I love my teams, my family, my home. So I'd live in the hottest part of the bay. I don't want a big home, not a mansion, that just isn't me. Give me a few bedrooms, a fireplace, a basement with a poker table and walls covered with memoribilia. A one story house would be ideal. A porch to sit on. A dog to keep me company. I love to read and write, but that would be an extension of what I've always done.

I would coach someone's basketball team, be it my grandson's or my nephew's or whoever's. I'd stay in as good a shape as I can physically. And of course I'd play poker, although I imagine that my days of playing online will be done the day I turn 21. So I'd have to live close to casino, and I'd be the host of a homegame, probably on monday nights so we could watch football while we play, me and friends. I'd have family over for dinner as much as I can.

All I ask is that I be debt free and surrounded by good people. It ain't much, but I know it'd make me happy.

Man, this sounds great. You've got good ideas. I think you and I have pretty similar desires.

Re: The boat. I wasn't implying that is was "too much" in terms of being ridiculous, but just "too much" in terms of cost/maintenance/hassle...etc. I mean if you are REALLY loaded, then yeah, who cares. Get the boat. I'm definitely in the same boat (nnnhahahaha...hey Lois...look what I did...I said "boat"..nhahaaaaa ) when it comes to getting angry at society and going off to be a hermit for a month. I'm just not sure I'd want the responsibility when I'm "retired."

you never retire if you are a productive and enterprising person. i have all the stuff many have said they wanted. its all fluff. what you want is health and a desire to do more.
if you let your health go as many of my friends have when you retire it is to a community ward or a wheel chair.
