Every hand you play your luck factor decreases. It never reaches 0, but continually approaches it.

I used to hate when people would tell me this... even though I knew it's mathematically true, I was just so pissed off that it didn't seem true for me. For something like 4-5 months, whenever I was in a large pot (2+ buyins in the middle) I won about 25% of the time despite being over a 75% favorite on average (yes I did the math). When I moved up in stakes it got even worse, and I eventually quit because of it.

Came back a while later, and now it's almost the opposite. If I feel like playing a smaller game, or anytime I'm up against a shortstacker, I'll lose to 3-outers all day long. But in big pots now I'm winning coinflip after coinflip, hitting 5 card straights on the board against AA... it's awesome when luck is not only failing to screw you over, but it's actually favoring you.

To answer the OP's question: Depends on how skilled your opponents are. If you're both good, luck is a huge factor. If you're both bad, luck is huge. If there's a real difference in skill then luck matters a whole lot less.

Also I've noticed the players who complain of the worst luck, are the ones who are good at poker but terrible with bankroll management. They put themselves into situations where their bad luck always costs the maximum amount of money.

Over 100 hands: tons

Over 100 000 hands: not much

But for certain people:

Over 1 600 000 hands: 100% luck.

The institute for psychology in gambling did a study in 1983 and determined that success in poker is based on the following weightings:

10%: luck

20%: skill

15%: concentrated power of will

5%: pleasure

50%: pain

100%: reason to remember the name
