Pfizer just lost patent for Zithromax. Pfizer will lose patent for Lipitor in 2010. There follow up to Lipitor was pulled during clinical trials because it did not perform better than Lipitor. Lipitor makes up a huge portion of it's profit. They spend too much money on advertising and have very few drugs in the pipeline in the future. Personally, I feel like the pharmaceuctical companies are investing in the present and not in the future.

I'm a PharmD candidate, and while obviously I don't know how this company is going to end up, I think nearly all the pharmaceutical companies are just pushing overpriced drugs that are barely better than the classics. I would personally never invest in them because of how skeptical I am about them.

any study iv ever come across has shown that the top selling drugs in most categories are the same or even worse than cheaper generics available. Marketing is pretty powerful. My dad groans every time he sees a commerical that ends in "ask your doctor about ..." because he always gets calls from schizophrenics about ulcer mediation and the like.

Novartis is in a better long-term position than Pfizer due to the increase in generics sales.

Maybe instead of sectors you should concentrate more on asset class, as this is what defines diversity. If it is individual stocks that you are trading, then asset class isnt as important but then there are separate things to consider.

Are you trying to diversify with ind. stocks? this is even a more tricky scenario.....more info needed

[/ QUOTE ]

Well yeah im going to buy ind. stocks. I dont have any fonds or stuff like that.
What does "asset class" mean?
Im german, i dont really understand this one?

And yes, novartis maybe would also be fine. Maybe i will sell pfizer and buy novartis.
The actual rating is"buy"...

Why not?
They should know what they are talking about.
But i know what you mean. I should do my own research and so on. I do this but i also listen to what the analysts are saying.
They need to know dont they?

analyst reports can be pretty useful, in the sense that they can highlight main issues and tell you what you should be looking for. But online "buy" "sell" ratings are pretty much random.

For starters, you are seeing the analysts information, after all the smart money has already "acted" on the information they provide.

Beyond that, ratings are meaningless, and slow to change... take note of how many downgrades occur after a stock has already dropped... what's the usefulness of that?

well i know that analysts are often wrong but they should be better than the average investor?!?
So if a newbie comes and doesn`t know what he is doing it would be better if he listens to them.
That`s what i mean.
