Default Air flight tips needed - last minute travel

I have a special friend in LA, I'm trying to get her out to meet me in Vegas on weekends as often as possible. Her last flight was only $114 round trip, but now the cheapest flights I can find start at $200 or so. So instead of booking in advance I am now thinking about last minute flight opportunities - arriving at the airport and giving it a shot with no advance warning.

How does this work? Do you have to go to each ticket counter and hope you get lucky, or is there a same day ticket broker on the net? What kind of deals are typical, will prices drop 25% 1 hour before the flight leaves to assure the plane is booked? How complicated is this to do? Will she be forced to go to the airport or can we do this remotely? English is a second language for her so I am trying to make this as simple as possible. Thanks!

AirCanada offers a unlimited flight package. You pay a set amount and then can fly as much as you want between any city in the region for 3 months. You might want to check if any US carriers offer something similar.

TT,

As far as I know, The only airline that promotes last minute fares is Airtran, and they do it for students only.

The airlines have gotten better at filling flights, and with jet fuel prices up, many have annouced fare increases.

I checked JetBlue, Ted (United), Southwest, US Airways, all wanted around $220 for flying out today, returning Friday.
