you can swim year round. Pattaya beach is probably the worst beach in Thailand that I know of. There are other beaches within a short drive from it though that are OK.

you're right. very stupid to say "sure". but it wasn't over $1. it was because the guy was a complete [censored]. told us to f-off several times and then HE SAID "you wanna fight". we told him where we wanted to go when we got into the taxi. half way there, he says either pay up and restart the meter or get out and get another taxi. and on top of it is a complete [censored]. i doubt most people could keep their mouth shut in this situation, especially if they are drunk.

Question about finding a place to live:

I'm thinking of moving to thailand for 6mos-1yr. I'll likely be going with my g/f (beat, I know) and I'm looking for a nice modern place for the two of us that is close to the beach.

I'm paying ~$1k/month for my tiny apartment in Seoul right now, and would be happy paying around the same price(even more for something nice).

I just started batting this idea around, so I'm pretty much clueless to in regard to housing costs in Thailand.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks, link helped a lot.

Question about visas:

If I just plan to play poker there, what is the best way to secure a 1yr stay?

I'm reading that simply going on visa runs every 30days wont work past 90days.

How are the guys living there and playing poker for a living managing it?

[/ QUOTE ]just ask for a 1 year visa at Thai embassy. Pretty random, depends which country you're from and in which country you ask. I don't think you'll get in in any of the neightbouring countries though. Australia is best chance imo.

or just ask for tourist visa, delivered in all Thai embassies. that gives you 2+1 month, after 3 month just go to cambodia/laos/malaysia...for mandatory vacation and ask for a new 2+1 month tourist visa and rinse/repeat.

more websites:

...

[edit]oops most of these websites are for BKK accomodation. didn't read about you wanting to be close to the beach. Best to go in person then, most beach vacation style housing you'll find on the net are ridic. overpriced. but here's one for Phuket with ok prices to give you an idea of how much it costs: http://www.houseinphuket.com/

Thanks for the info.

Does anyone have any decent recommendations of places to stay in Phuket or Ko Samui for approximately one month? I'm looking to bunk down and play some poker in that time, so a stable decent internet connection is crucial.

Many of the resort-style places I've been looking at are not clear on internet availability. Basically, a clean apartment with broadband would be perfect.

Any suggestions? PM me (or respond here) please if you have any tips.

You know I was never big on Thailand, though not really against it either. Then I saw this crap.

http://www.houseinphuket.com/houses/LTR/a0008/

Seriously $1,200 a month for this place? Anyone want to split it with me? Jesus. 3 bedrooms + huge office.

I know absolutely nothing about Phuket, but I must say this area looks much more developed than the last thread let on.
