Re: A-Rod opts out of contract
[ QUOTE ]
A player who hits 250 homeruns in a season but doesn't win a championship can not go back and argue that his 250 homeruns is more likely to have won his team a championship, unless he has a time machine. [/ QUOTE ] Sure he can. It should be rather obvious that hitting 250 home runs is more likely to win a championship than striking out every time. |

Re: A-Rod opts out of contract
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I wouldn't be surprised if Boras already has a commitment from the Cubs for a 10-year $300,000,000 deal including an ownership interest at the back end. Or something similar. A-Rod will end up with 800+ home runs if he finishes his career as a Cub. [/ QUOTE ] Except aren't the Cubs up for sale? I can't imagine that potential buyers would be thrilled with Arod getting an ownership stake. [/ QUOTE ] The cubs can't make any offer. The current ownership already spent $400m on new contracts, they can't spend more without the new owners agreement. The new owner can't approve it because they'd never get approved as new owners by the MLB. And any ownership stake gets a contract voided by the MLB, as does any attempt to skirt the luxury tax. |

Re: A-Rod opts out of contract
dc,
i agree with all of your potential reasonings, but what boras cited is perhaps the strongest -- after his previous contract experiences, the last thing arod wants to do is be rushed into an extremely crucial nonfinancial decision. unlike most other players, he has been taught by life to not care about money nearly as much anymore, so whether the yankees offer will be matched in free agency or not is largely irrelevant. the real key was flexibility to make the most optimal nonfinancial decision, and if it meant potentially closing the door on a chance to play for the yankees, they are not that special anymore to arod anyway. but ultimately, if after exploring free agency for a few months he begins to again crave new york, he could always just eat the texas subsidy himself and re-sign happily ever after. |

You can't say someone is more likely to have won a championship when he didn't win a championship. The probability of him not having won a championship is 100%. Is this point really over people's heads? Many people who discuss "greatest" are not trying to predict the future. They are trying to predict the past. |

Re: A-Rod opts out of contract
Okay, so if the Dodgers do fire Grady, and hire Joe Torre and Mattingly, what are the chances they sign A-Rod, Posada, and/ or Rivera?

It's pretty much a given. Both will be getting 3 year deals for roughly $40 million. And considering that Torre dropped A-Rod to the 8th spot in the line-up in a playoff game, I seriously doubt A-Rod wants anything to do w/ Torre. And I'm sure the feeling is mutual. |
