Exactly. O but hay, let's lock people up anyway, force them to spend thousands on fines and lawyers and jacked up insurance rates and maybe lose their jobs and have them crowd up our jails, yeah that's a way better solution than us realizing that it's gone too far and now it's just cops pinching harmless drivers under the guise of "public safety".

Hey how about this idea? After someone's 21st birthday they can go to the MVA and sign up for a drunk driving test. They can bring a DD or whatever with them, along with a case of beer. They can drink to a certain BAC level, and perform the standard driver's test. If they complete the test with a passing score, the MVA can then print the recorded BAC on their new driver's license. If the person is then pulled over by a cop they cannot be booked unless they have a BAC over the one printed on their license. Hell they could even make a new course designed specifically to test someone's proficiency at driving with alcohol in their system.

This is strictly in the planning stages,as I just thought of it, so tell me what you think.

Assuming they have to cover all costs (no way in hell do I want a tax dollar going to cover this), I would be 100% for this.

Though, the uproar would more than make this never happen

the line has to be set somewhere, and you guys who love to drive drunk are lucky there's not enough cops to catch them all.

I actually love this. It could just be a different line at the DMV. I think it might work better if the test were a little harder though. This could also help weed out people who just plain suck at driving.

One question: we know of officers pulling people over, determining they're intoxicated even though they tested less than .08, yet booking them still. Has anyone heard of a case of an officer breathalysing someone at greaten than .08 yet letting them go because they seemed alert, and capable of operating heavy machinery? Seems to me discretion should go both ways hmmm?

To play the other side of this, you would be concentrating more on driving during the test, making the results skewed. I'd say the average person that makes drunk driving dangerous is acting retarded with their phone, eating etc. The same activities that make regular driving dangerous probably get compounded when you're drunk because of the shortened attention span.

Right, but that's true for crummy drivers of all stripes taking a driving test.

Great Simpsons quote time:

My car gets forty rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I likes it!

(I just looked this up, it's apparently about 10 feet per gallon of gas.. Ouch!)

and for those of you saying 0.8 is a stupid arbitrary line - 0.8 is pretty drunk - it definitely affects your ability to drive. there have been many, many studies done on this (none of which i'm going to look up cuz i'm lazy).
