Default Finding a Good Employee

I own a 10 minutie oil change and need a good employee.
What is the best way to find dependable employees?

Advertising in the paper doesnt bring in the applicants I want.

Paging tuq. I don't think he recruits Jiffy Lube employees, but he could have some insight here.

Badger,

Thanks.

OP, it is way outside the realm of my knowledge. However, a former technical consultant of mine quit his job earlier this year to fulfill his dream of owning a garage (no joke). He's been at it for about six months now. I could ask him how he has gone about finding good people and report back.

On the one hand, I would think the failure rate on this stuff would be really high. On the other, don't qualified mechanics actually make decent coin? I guess "qualified mechanics" don't work at lube/oil/filter joints though...

Let me know via PM if you would like help in case I forget about this thread. Thanks.

Hire from a recommendation of somebody you trust.

There are two types of people who take low paying jobs. Lifers and people who for one reason or another need a job for a little while.

If you hire a lifer (someone who is destined to make crap wages for life), you know what you are going to get. There is a reason why they still work for peanuts. Either they aren't smart, hard working, or reliable enough to get a better job.

You need to focus on finding people in the other group. A good example would be a high school kid who does well in school. Sure they are going to quit one day when they get to college. But they will most likely be smarter, and harder working than the lifer.

Good employees tend to hang out with good people, put the word out to the guys that you have now that you are looking to hire, and cross your fingers.

Im about to go through the hiring process myself, and in the bar industry. If someone said, ill get you 3 good employees in exchange for letting me take a baseball bat to your knees, Id accept in a new york minute.
