Default 10 years after OK Computer...

There isn't a singer-songwriter of note today that doesn't list Radiohead as one of their heroes or influences.

It's been 10 years since OK Computer was released and while there's no shortage of Radiohead covers, Stereogum rounded up artists to cover the entire OK Computer album:
http://www.stereogum.com/okx/

The two-fold purpose of this thread is such:

1. What do you think of these covers?

2. If you are a big fan of Radiohead, what was it about them that made their music resonate so strongly with people? Is it the emotion from Thom Yorke's singing voice? Something about the themes in the music itself? The melodies or instruments or recording techniques? If you're not a big fan of their music, why doesn't it "work" for you?

Never could figure out the appeal of them. The only song I ever 'liked' is Creep (and only because of the cool distorted, muted string 'chukka chukka' part). I'm told Creep is the one song most Radiohead fans don't like, so w/e.

Not particularly impressed by who they got to do the covers.

I mean, I recognize about half the names, but I have a combined 0 songs in my library from any of them.

Which is a shame because I really doubt you'd have a hard time convincing some really, really great bands to do this.

2. Slaraffenland - "Paranoid Android" (MP3) [Slaraffenland notes]
3. Mobius Band - "Subterranean Homesick Alien" (MP3) [Mobius Band's notes]
4. Vampire Weekend - "Exit Music (For a Film)" (MP3) [Vampire Weekend's notes]
5. David Bazan's Black Cloud - "Let Down" (MP3) [David Bazan's notes]
6. John Vanderslice - "Karma Police" (MP3) [John Vanderslice's notes]
7. Samson Dalonoga feat. The Found Sound Orchestra - "Fitter Happier" (MP3) [Samson Dalonoga's notes]
8. Cold War Kids - "Electioneering" (MP3) [Cold War Kids' notes]
9. The Twilight Sad - "Climbing Up the Walls" (MP3) [The Twilight Sad's notes]
10. Marissa Nadler feat. Black Hole Infinity - "No Surprises" (MP3) [Marissa Nadler's notes]
11. My Brightest Diamond - "Lucky" (MP3) [My Brightest Diamond's notes]
12. Flash Hawk Parlor Ensemble - "The Tourist" (MP3) [Flash Hawk Parlor Ensemble's notes]

I'm going to start downloading and listening - truthfully I'm not entirely optimistic having heard past radiohead covers.

If anyone hasn't heard the reggae band Easy Star All Stars cover album of OK Computer called Radiodread I highly recommend it.

The cool thing about Radiohead is they're one of the few bands for the last two generations that will still having touring power 30 years from now. I don't know if they will but I'd love to still be able to see them when I'm 40+ as they're amazing live.

Did the band also sign off on the covers? If not, I'd have to think there's a big disconnect between Radiohead and these songs.

On a - sorta - separate note, since Radiohead got big critics have named tons of bands as "the next Radiohead," and none have lived up to it. Why should this list be any different?

i am a huge music fan and i have never really liked them anywhere close to as much as everyone else, they haven't really "clicked" for me. yorke's voice doesn't really do it for me at first listen. all of my friends have always told me its weird that i never got hooked on them, they are all huge fans and we have similar taste. whenever this comes up in discussion people are always urging me to listen to them more, i am not ruling out that if i put some more time into listening to them i won't become much more appreciative of them.

I haven't heard any band named "the next Radiohead" in years.

And I think you're completely missing the point of the covers.
