Default Any computer for a student, what to get?

My grandparents have agreed to buy me a new computer as a graduation present. They've spent up to about 3500$ before, and told me I could get whatever I want.

I have a decent computer right now, 2 gig ram, 2.66 mghrz, 2 2001 FP's, an OK graphics card, [censored] sound, but it gets the job done and is plenty fast.

This makes me want a laptop for school, but I also think it would be cool to have a more portable media center in a bigger/heavier laptop.

So for those who've been around, what would you get? I like gaming, but not that much, I have a computer for poker, but could get a new one, what would you do?

That or an Alienware. If you get a desktop, you can build a killer one for $2500. You've already got the monitors.
