Default Coming Soon: Justin Upton

He's in AA now. I predict a mid August MLB ETA.

I'm a huge DBacks fan. But I don't expect him to make it up this year. His single A numbers were very good, but not otherworldly. He's going to have to adjust and improve as he moves up through AA and presumably, AAA. And I'm not sure the team has a place for him right now.

Next year they can move out Eric Byrnes if Chris Young and Carlos Quentin start hitting.

Next year. This year is all about figuring out which of their young studs can really play. I'm actually shocked they are doing as well as they are, given the horrible hitting. Who would have thought that bandaided pitching staff would start so well? Doug Davis makes me cringe when he pitches, he's like a guy running back and forth across a highway, every inning I expect a multi baserunner pileup.

He's really not that good. Yet.

I did. While Doug Davis is Doug Davis, that's not so terrible as far as fourth starters go. Webb, Johnson, and Hernandez give the D'Backs a formidable front three and insure that they will be no worse than league average in pitching. The bullpen has a lot of live arms which gives them a chance at a solid bullpen. Coming into this year, I thought the pitching was the strength of the team, and I thought they'd be right where they are. This team will be in the thick of things come September, setting themselves up to be the NL favorite in 2008.

And yes, I expect Justin Upton to be a part of that championship team!

His career ERA+ is 101, which is okay. But where he gets his value is he's pitched at least 216 innings each of the last 7 years. Starters who pitch lots of innings with okay ERAs are valuable because they save the team from putting in less skilled bullpen guys. I wouldn't call him formidable, but he's a pretty good 3rd starter.

While we're talking about the DBacks pitching, what are the prospects for Micah Owings? I own him in a keeper fantasy league, and I'm trying to decide if I should stick with him or not. Is he in their long term plans? What do the homers think of him?
