Default Crysis: Bold, beautiful... before its time

I haven't seen anything on this forum yet about the newly released Crysis... so, here's my take.

I've been playing through it for 2-3 days now (not yet to the ice level), and think that it's so bleeding edge that few current systems will run it at performance serious gamers find acceptable. I have a system that is still dripping blood from the bleeding edge (not quite a QX9650 Penryn... but close), and cannot run the game with all graphics options cranked. I can get about 30 FPS on *HIGH* (not very high) settings on:

QX6700 OC 3.2 Ghz Quad Core
4 GB RAM
Vista Ultimate x64
8800 GTX 768 MB watercooled

I drop to the teens if I try to turn on "very high" (especially shaders), or any anti-aliasing.

Mind you, this is a gorgeous game even on "high" settings. The physics are stunning, and virtually every blade of grass is its own object. The water is fantastic.

I can't wait to see what this looks like on a next generation nVidia (9900, or whatever). Until then, today's hardware is just barely adequate for this year's # 2 game (#1 being BioShock).

that's a pretty sick rig you got there imo. i would have thought that'd be able to run max settings.

sounds like the game is pretty unreal, though

There are some comparison screen shots of the various settings here:

Crysis Tweak Guide

There's a definite difference between Medium and High, but not so much between High and Very High. There's LOTS of different effects going on in this game (as you can see from the Tweak Guide), and you can pick and choose which effects to maximize for the performance of your rig.

I've found that I prefer a slightly higher frame rate, so I drop down to 1680x1050 to play Crysis, as that bumps me up into the low 40's with everything at High except Shaders (Medium). Sadly, that one (Shaders) is the one that makes the most difference.

Also, as a side note, even though I don't have a second 8800 installed, it wouldn't make any difference. To make the ship date, SLI support was left out and the game only supports a single card for now. Crytek will issue a patch in the near future to add SLI support... so maybe those lucky few who have dual 8800's will see some improvement. I won't bother to upgrade to SLI, though -- I'm just going to wait for the D9E, or perhaps the second gen D9E.

I'm pretty sure any of my computers would erupt in flames if I tried to run this game, heh.

Looks so so nice though.

It's "r_displayinfo 1" in the console (button left of 1 on the keyboard)

This game is awesome and I'm surprised there's not much more discussion about it. Unfortunately though, it seems to constantly crash my 8800GTS so I haven't really been able to play it, working on a solution atm though!
