Re: Freedom vs License
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Religion is the leading killer of people in the history of man. [/ QUOTE ] You're probably thinking of malaria. It's similar to religion, except instead of being an organized system of beliefs about the origins of mankind and the universe, it's an acute syndrome caused by a microscopic protozoan of genus Plasmodium. Here's a mnemonic to help you keep them straight: Malaria is a microbe, and religion is a regimented system of beliefs. [/ QUOTE ] This is funny but I'm not really sure why you bothered posting it. I'm assuming you disagree with my assertion about the danger of religion, that's fine, but I'm pretty sure (as it has a huge head start) that it's way up there. Now some one pointed out that Political movements have killed more and as I don't have the numbers on all the Crusades, Jihads, and any other ritualistic or spontanious killing done in the name of a God, I can't easily debate that, good point though. Re: Freedom vs License
It is very difficult to seperate religion from politics, especially in the case of the crusades, of jihads. They are one in the same.
Religious beliefs have lead to the slaughter of untold millions but there are very few religions whose tenets include killing others. This implies that it must of been politically convienient to wage holy war, rather than a religious necesity. |

[/ QUOTE ] Oh you're totally right, the Crusades for example were just a war waged under a religious banner, but to me, it's always been interesting to think about what people would've done without religion to galvanize them (of course it's equally likely that they would've faught simply because their lord would've kicked them off their land had they not). Re: Freedom vs License
Interesting, Hitler wasn't #1. I'd have never known.
So is this to say the #1 killer of man is economic policy? (Other than aging, of course. LOL!) |

Interesting, Hitler wasn't #1. I'd have never known. [/ QUOTE ] If you attribute to him not just all the victims of the holocaust, but also all european theater war related deaths, then the figure would be much higher, especially with Russian war dead of 20+ million. |

Re: Freedom vs License
Yes, I'm beginning to find that out. Just went and Googled on Stalin.
So are we saying that in addition to the 20M WW II casualties, Stalin killed another 20M? |

Re: Freedom vs License
Commmunism is a political idealogy, not an economic policy.
