Wow, that is just horrible advice for dudes so money conscious that they are willing to stack 6 deep per room.

Clubs are a money drain and if you are lucky, the one or two guys that have game in your group might get some fuglies back to the room.

OP clearly stated his and his friends goals....low limit BJ and assorted gambling. Getting drunk every day. Attending strip clubs. Sightseeing. Not overspending.

As to those goals...........

Lots of low limit BJ downtown

Cheap rooms downtown.

Cheap food downtown.

Cheap alcohol downtown.

Strip club downtown(I don't recommend it though).

Cheap transportation to said sightseeing(the Duece).

Frankly ops best play, if they can manage it, is to stay somewhere downtown on the weekend. Realistically 3 to a room(so two rooms)at Las Vegas Club or Plaza is probably best. Drink, sneak into GN's pool area, hit Spearmint Rhino at night(be warned...$30 cover as you arrive by cab...limo service may be best...also don't go to any other strip club). Monday & Tues night find the cheapest strip place you can find. Casino Royale, Imperial Palace, Tropicana, can all tend to be inexpensive.

Since they are in college, your pals shouldn't have too much difficulty learning a simple Video Poker Strategy or two. If you do, then there are always bartop VP machines that, by playing, qualify you for free booze. If you tip and smile a bit, you will get a lot of booze for tiny losses. There is a site called VP free or somesuch that actually lists where the juicier VP machines are in bartops. I believe the Main Street Station has a few good ones at their brewpub if you are staying downtown.

The bartop machines, even with perfect play, are unlikely to offer better odds than blackjack.

On renting a car:
If you stay downtown, you'll hardly drive it and you'll have to pay for parking. You can't drive on Fremont Street since they turned it into a giant crosswalk.

If you drive to strip hotels, many of them won't valet non-hotel guests. That leaves you to navigate their mazes to the parking garages. Not fun for a first time visitor at night.

You don't want to take a strip club limo. Go to a bigger strip hotel with a limo or two out front, like Bally's or Bellagio. If you've got game, you can probably talk the limo driver into taking your group for free. The reason is that you'll pay $30 each cover and the strip club will pay the driver $10 to $20 for each person he brings. If anyone in your group is in sales or marketing, or majoring in such, make him your spokesman. A guy in our group (he runs his own company) got the driver to pay him twenty bucks for taking us!

Renting a car is not that expensive. Even if you are under 21. I rented a car at the age of 21 back in may for like $20 a day through enterprise. DEF go through enterprise as it has the lowest "being under 25" fee of all the companies. Furthermore, if you rent your car from an enterprise location NOT at the airport it is ALOT cheaper. There is an Enterprise a few miles west of the strip on Sahara. Plus enterprise will pick you up from your hotel if you just call and ask them to. However, by renting a car at the airport you don't have to pay for transportation to and from the airport. So it might be cheaper to just pay the higher price since you have 6 ppl.

Airport shuttles to any hotel run $7 per person one way. It is your cheapest option by far (if you don't rent a car). You can also call and schedule the shuttle to pick you up from your hotel for your return flight. The shuttles are right outside the airport baggage terminal. No need for reservations or anything.

Where to stay:
Downtown is the best place for cheap gambling and food. I def do recommend checking it out. However, Strip is definitely better and has alot more stuff to do. But drinks are ridiculous ($5 a beer) and so is food except at the crappier casinos (O'sheas, casino royale).

I would recommend staying on the strip at Imperial Palace or Casino Royale. They are right in the middle of everything and the cheapest "on the strip" hotels. Sahara is also cheap but it is way at the North end of the strip which is lame. If you do stay on the strip still take the bus (THE DUECE) to downtown and spend a day there to check it out.

Getting around Vegas:
There is a bus called The Duece that goes up and down the strip and to downtown. It is $2 one way $5 for a 24hr pass. The bus is very slow due to all the traffic on Las Vegas Blvd as well as the bus stopping every half mile except 1am-9am then its quick. However, if you want to get from one end of the strip to the other, its the cheap way to go. Taxi's are your other option but they are pricey.

How to be a Miser:
1) when you are downtown on Fremont street. There are little convience stores right in between the casinos where you can buy Beer. A cold sixer cost like $8 bucks. And is much cheaper than buying the same bottled beer from a casino bar.

2)Find Video Poker machines on the bars that offer blackjack. I know the machines in the bars inside Treasure Island offer video blackjack where you can play for only $1 a hand and get free drinks. It most always comes out cheaper to play than to actually buy the drinks.

This is sorta incorrect in that it omits the possibility of valet parking. There is no charge for valet parking downtown.

Wow, keep it coming fellas, anything you have to offer will probably be useful. As for updates. In looking at rooms, we've talked and are seriously leaning towrads Casino Royale, the location seems great (assuming we can shuttle to downtown) and the rates are really cheap.
We're seeing flights round-trip from Indy to LV for about $400, how does that look to the more familiar?
I suppose I should also clarify, when I say cheap, we're looking at around 1-1.5k each. Our scale of cheap may vary slightly from some peoples so having an approx. figure might help.

just got back from Vegas 2 weeks ago an spent 4/5 nights at Casino Royale. It really is a great place because it is cheaper than all surrounding casino hotels and is in the PERFECT spot on the strip. Within walking distance to all major casinos. There is even cheap play at C.R. including slots and bj. Also cheap eats (subway, B&J's, etc.)

There is nothing wrong with the rooms. They're not luxurious like Wynn, B, whatever, but as far as a pass out safe spot, it has everything you will need.

I've stayed downtown as well over the 4th of July at Binions and Golden Gate. they are o.k. but for people wanting to "see the sites" You will need to be on the strip as there is nothing worth seeing downtown except Freemont experience and that is outweighed by the strip on all counts.

Oh and STAY AWAY FROM EL CORTEZ.

Haha as a little aside, we aren't going to stay at El Cortez, but what's the reason beind the almost unanimous hatred. Most reviews I read were passible.

I saw a show on Travel or something talking about things to do in Vegas, and they mentioned that having open alcohol containers is ok on foot, but the open bottle law applies in cars/taxies.
