Default Espn right now

Check it, they are showing a story on Men Ju Woo, some dude who killed 3 people over being too deep into sports bets.

Edit: The piece is over now. It was on the show Espn 360 and focused on how much more college kids are gambling now a days. All in all, it was quite interesting, but obviously anti gambling.

I watched it.

Balanced story given the context. They were clearly focusing on problem gambling, and the points they made about (some) college kids were valid. It's one thing for adults to gamble their own money recreationally, but when it's a 20 year old gambling his parents' money and hiding it, it's a different issue. There was at least one misleading statistic (something like "85% of problem college gamblers commit crimes," which of course sounds worse than it is, depending on how one defines a problem gambler.) Main focus was sports betting and they basically left poker out of it, except for the "are we hypocrites?" line about tv poker coverage.

Ideally, they would present the fact that a lot of college students play poker responsibly, with an edge and within a bankroll, and that a lot of others gamble recreationally within reasonable limits, but that's probably asking too much for a 15 minute piece that leads with a triple homicide over a $17k sports bet.

edit: An aside, I really like the format of this show.

"85% of college gamblers commit crimes"

Well [censored], does this include underage drinking?

I saw this special too. Cliff notes for those who are unaware of story: Rich kid from Taiwan(? not 100% sure of country), comes over here to attend college in Washington.....gets hooked on gambling, etc. Meets up with a fellow sports bettor at a casino, who helps this kid set up an online account with a company in carribean(kids kind of a thug, totes a gun). Kid loses a ton (like 75k) from a joint account he shares w/ parents, they notice, and plan to fly over to US to get him and take him home. Kid knows they're coming, makes one last bet with his partner to try and bounce back b4 parents arrive, wins bet(like 17k), then finds out partner never placed the bet. Partner knows he'll be gone soon, and tells him to [censored] off. Kid gets gun, storms house, and kills his former partner, and two innocent friends who happenned to be in house. While in jail, kid hangs himself.

Personally, if someone did that to me, I'd be tempted to light him with my gun too. Am I the only one who is fixated on how slimy this guy was to take this bet, then not pay this kid, especially considering how bad he'd run? Am I the only one who feels this kid got what he deserved, especially since the Asian kid had no legal recourse?

So he blatantly screws over somebody who's down and out, probably feels like they have nothing to lose - oh yeah, and they carry a gun too. Smart!
