Default Tunica

My girlfriend I are making our first trip to Tunica next weekend or the one after. I did a couple quick searches on 2p2 and google for info but they didn't answer all my questions.

1. Games? My GF will be playing 1/2-1/3NL and I'll be playing 2/5-5/10NL and perhaps 10/20-15/30 LHE or Omaha H/L. I'm not so concerned about the quality of the games because obviously at the limits we play we're not going to encounter stellar play, but some info on the rooms with the biggest game selection and/or are in close proximity to other properties is appreciated.

2. Where to stay? We were planning on staying at either the Grand or Horseshoe, but are open to suggestions. Properties with poker rates are preferable.

3. Food? We're not picky. Snackbars/buffets/etc. are fine since almost all waking hours will be spent playing poker but it would be nice to know of any place that has a particularly good buffet or if there is somewhere we should avoid. Also, we'll probably have at least one meal at a nicer restuarant so any suggestions on a steak place or otherwise is appreciated.

4. Comps? Not a deciding factor but if we'll take advantage of them if they're available. It seems like every poker room has their own [censored] up comp system with player cards, gimmicks, asking the right people, burning the right type of incense, etc. so more importantantly, HOW do we go about getting them?

5. Other? We'd love to hear any additional comments or experiences people have had. They don't have to be poker related either. If there is some bar/restuarant/strip club/historical site/etc. in or around Tunica or Memphis that a visitor should consider then let us know!

I'll be posting a trip report when we get back. Wish us luck!

The Gold Strike and The Horseshoe are literally right next to each other, and between the two have the best games, comps and food in Tunica.

Gold Strike is worth a to try for a poker rate this late, but they may be sold out of those rooms. The Grand might have one available, but their poker room is inferior and isolated from others.

Gold Strike has excellent action in their 1/2 game. Horseshoe has the 2/5 as well as being the only room with consistent 10/20 and 20/40 limit HE.

Horseshoe has awesome food, Gold Strike is decent. Both offer generous food comps, especially Horseshoe. Steak house at Binions is supposed to be great if you want to spend money on food instead of eating free buffet, though I haven't eaten there.

Barbeque in Memphis is awesome. My favorite is Blues City Cafe on Beale Street.

The Goldstrike's action is overall good...but...on the weekends they'll have let's say 4 tables of 1/2 nl...one will be an action table full of lunatics & one will be a table of rocks. The other two will be somewhere in the middle. Just hope you don't get stuck on the rock table!!!

Comps are so easy at the Horseshoe. Call the room in advance for poker rate. They put you at the Grand, but it's fine unless you plan to be drinking -- Tunica has enforcement of DUI laws. It's a really short drive. There's also a shuttle but it's complicated. You take the shuttle from the Horseshoe to the Grand Casino, and catch a second shuttle that goes around the Grand property to take you to the Grand Verandah, which is where you as a poker player will likely be staying. But for $30 a night ($40 some weekend nights) it's probably worth a little hassle.

It doesn't always go, but there's a good 20/40 LHE at Horseshoe. You can get food free of charge brought to the table, fast food type stuff like cheeseburgers, Philadelphia cheesesteak, etc. Check the menu at "Ace High" nearby to get an idea. You can also get a buffet for two which is good for I think 72 hours, but we always eat it sooner than that, for instance at lunch or breakfast the next day.

A little joke someone told me the first time at Tunica. "Ever play 4/8? Well, 20/40 plays just like that." If both 10/20 and 20/40 are running, play the bigger game. In my limited sample size, the bigger game is looser and there can be a nice amount of dead money in the pot. I don't play NL so I won't speak to that.

I highly recommend the steak house there - very good. The buffet was good as well.

I've only been to Tunica once (when a friend was in Memphis for a wedding and talked me into spending a few days). I got the poker rate at Horseshoe (all I did was ask - no hassle) and found: the 20-40 to be absolutely great (it was played with a rock which was awesome), the regulars to be very friendly, comps to b the buffet or snackbar came with no questions asked and the rooms were awesome and cheap (GREAT beds).

I would like to get back there again sometime.

Jeff

keep in mind that the Horseshoe 2/5 NL game has no cap on the buy-in.
So some players will start with $1k or $3k or even more than that. Others will buy in for the minimum of $200 of course. But the deeper stacks lead to it playing a bit bigger than your typical 2/5 NL game in other areas imo where the buy-in is capped.

2/5 NL at Horseshoe might not be quite equal to 5/10 NL somewhere else. But it's probably close-ish a lot of the time I imagine.

Poker-rate at Horseshoe only to be put up all the way at the Grand about a 5 minute drive away..not including time to park, etc....is kind of a pain imo.
I would rather stay right there.

Horseshoe and Gold Strike are practically attached. Barely any walking space between them so it works like 1 really large casino with a little bit of outdoors in the middle if you want to look at it that way.
Staying at either one of those places is much nicer and more convenient imo since you don't have to be trudging back and forth to your car in the parking-lot all the time. You can just go up and down the elevator from your room to the casino. Much easier and more fun imo.

The way to get the poker rate at the Shoe is by calling at 9 am the morning of, at least that was the newest rule a couple months ago. I suggest talking to Todd and checking on new procedres.

Like I've said b4 my fav is GS and Shoe. BUT the Grand has a special for Sept 250k jackpot of AAAkk beaten 40/20/40. I heard Shoe's is high and GS is 310k but it's quad 10's beat.

Stay at Gold Strike, call ahead to the poker room and get the poker rate. Ask them to pick you up from the airport. (I was the only one going to the casino on the particular flight I came in on, and they picked me up in a limo. Not saying you should expect that, it could be a van, whatever.)

Play at the Gold Strike to get your hours for the poker rate, play at the Horseshoe for variation, or to get a $2/5 game (not sure they had one at Gold Strike or not).
